It's known as Lambda and Oxygen sensor

It sits in the exhaust, upstream of the Catalyst

It is the key sensor in the engine fuel control feedback loop.

The computer uses the O2 sensor's input to balance the fuel mixture, leaning the mixture when the sensor reads rich and richening the mixture when the sensor reads lean.

Aiming for the ideal stochiometric ratio to help ensure catalyst efficiency and life.

It does control the mixture in either direction of course in sympathy with other sensors in the whole system.

If yours is knacked, it is possible to get a universal one which is a lot cheaper than a Scooby one.
