Lazarote Car Hire

Anyone hired a car in Lazarote?
Is it cheaper to pre-book or doing it when I get there?
What's the age limit on hiring cars over there?
What are the roads/drivers like?

Haven't hired one in Lanzarote, but have in Fuerteventure, so th same rules should apply. Massive price gap between big names and local companies. Got a Suzuki Vitara for 120.00 a week. 21 and over from the company we went to -It might be best to go there and shop around. The drivers are all mad. They drive on the wrong side of the road and then scream and shout at you when you nearly crash. Seriously though, the roads in Fuerte are well maintained very quiet. More likely to hit a flock of camels than another car

We have a villa over there and go over alot. like the above posts say, go over and have a look at some of the local companies. We find they are cheaper than hire companies at the airport.
Be careful on the roads over there. tourists drive slow and locals drive quite fast. they drive on the right hand side too and LHD.
Roads are very well maintained. all black tarmac etc.

Hos > nice one, whereabouts is your villa (generally). I worked out there a while back behind a bar in Costa Teguise, loved every minute of and would recommend anyone without a mortgage/kids/job to give it a go.
didn't get chance to hire any cars though, although the bar owner had one and did indeed drive reasonably quickly!

Costa Teguise....been there but a bit windy for my liking so spent most of the time driving down to Playa Blanca on the south coast....it was luverley.
What did amuse me about Costa Teguise though was an Indian restaurant called Mahatma Cote (go on, say it slowly to yourself). Food was crap though!!! and excellent Chinese I seem to remember as well.....none of which contributes to car hire but I always rent locally and 'negotiate'.

Yeah i agree about the wind. It never used to be like that 10 years ago! very very strange. As for playa blanca, we hired an isuzu jeep once and got it stuck on the beach (when you were allowed to take your car down on there) and had to get helped out by germans in a vitara. shocker!
Ed, are you going to LBC?

I always use www.carjet.com for Tenerife. The cover all Spain and beyond. Much cheaper than our travel agents or in the resort.

Oh yes, roads are generally OK, but camber can be adverse - even on M-Way's. Standard of driving was OK too.
Can I suggest a trip to Orzola on the very NE tip. Very nice. About 1 or 2 miles before you reach Orzola on the road from Costa Teguise there is a small beach/lagoon used by the locals and some tourists. The sea goes out a fair way, leaving a nice lagoon effect with warm clear water and it is no deeper the 3-4' at worst. Great for kids as well. There used to be a small mobile catering van on the beach, so you will know when you have found it.

Orzola > that rings a bell
If you're into surfing or boogie boarding, try and get to Playa Famara (sp?). It's on the north east coast and gets the big breakers from the Atlantic, great stuff.
I recall a few days from my 3 months stint when it wasn't windy, and boy was it too hot!! The wind is pretty much constant during the day - heat from the Sahara drawing cold air in from the Atlantic, it really would be too hot without it
