Default Changing to private plate

Am going to send my cert off soon with the logbook etc.

When i put my private plate on the car "S500BY D" what happens to the old plate, i mean how would i get it back if i wanted.

Also is it mine to put on another car if i wish(as long it was not making the car look newer than it is)

Thanks

AFAIK the plate gets surrended back to the DVLA and re-issued.

The plate goes back to the dvla (not the actual plastic - that goes in the wheelie bin), then when you sell your car and transfer your illegally spaced plate over to your new car the old reg is allocated back to your old vehicle.
Every car I've ever had is now back on its original plate anyway as my private plate stays with me
Hope this helps

I didn't know that, I thought you had to pay for it to be held on retention if you wanted it returned to your car if you take the plate off? I never had the private plate taken off my old car so wouldn't have realised that the original plate was still valid.

Every day is a school day.

Out of curiosity, when older imports (such as my old WRX) are brought into the country and registered, where do the plates for them come from? Do the DVLA have a stockpile of witheld plates specifically for that purpose?

I suppose it goes back to DVLA and if it isnt used then it gets returned, if used you get issued a different one.

Not that i care to be honest, when you sell the car the plate doesnt matter.

Thanks for your replies everyone

Nope when i bought my 95 wrx import i got a brand new NI plate. the V5 said that it was first registered with one previous owner in 1995. i have since changed it to a nice 3 digit NI plate.
