Avoid premium rate phone calls...
...by using the companies geographical phone number or in some cases 0800 number.
Just visit www.saynoto0870.com and search for the company you want to ring or enter their 0870 or 0845 etc and it finds an alternative, national rate number for you to call instead!

Same is true on Vodafone - I found to my horror I'd spent £££'s on several calls to utilities when moving house. I thought it was a good use of my free minutes to be on hold with all these institutions - that was till Vodafone charged me an extra £15 for it.
I'd ditch them for another service provider on principle [and after 15 yrs] if they made 0800 type numbers free [or at least inclusive] as they should be!
What's 3G & T Mobile like then?

0870 is a national rate lo-call charged at 6.70 which ten years ago might have been cheap for a national call but nowadays is ridiculous, 0871s can be tariffed higher at 10ppm. Most companies use 0870 because they receive a small rebate on each call, typically 1-2ppm so thats why you see support lines using them and you dont have to go through the pain of dealing with ICSTCS to setup a true premium rate number. (which is not straightforward!)
