Pocket GPS World to start charging for camera database
This has kicked up a huge stink over there, as the camera site locations have been supplied by and large by Joe Public and they now want to start charging for it. Currently 500 posts and 31000 hits.http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/module...wtopic&t=32554

Pity, but to be honest I never expected it to stay free.
Cant really blame the guys who run it - probably be a nice little earner for them at 2quid a download because a LOT of people use their scamera database (me included).
I wont however be paying for it, as although its useful, its not vital for me to have the most up-to-date database on my satnav.
Anyone know of any other sites offering a database for free btw?

They'll probably adopt the Roadangel model; if you contribute you get it FOC, if you've added no value then you pay - which is fair enough.

That's a shame as I've been using that database myself since running TomTom.
Can't be ars*d to read through all 35 pages of the thread on their site but how excatly are they intending to copy protect the data? It will be available from all the usual locations within hours of release otherwise Not simple I'd have thought as it's just a load of TomTom POI, plenty of other POI available for free on the 'net.

I don't understand the objections. Pay like every other system on the market and the provider can probably obtain far more accurate information in the same way Road Angel or any other detector does.

Yes - but they will be using all sorts of CCTV, TrafficMaster, and other roadside cameras for ANPR and doing time and distance based speeding checks instead. "No more speed cameras" is technically correct tho
