Just got a new motor which had/has (not wired in at the minute) "midland CB radio" so presuming i can get it wired back in or want to get a different unit to wire in what is the crack with CB radios? Is it just sumin i can chat with truckers with?
Is there a site or FAQ anywhere?
Is that the kind of thing you can get sumin to tune into police frequencies or such dubious practises?

CB's are 27Mhz..
Police are around 420 - 440Mhz.. its one side of the 70cm's band (432Mhz) cant remember which way though.. as my Yaesu FT51R (Expanded to military spec) will transmit and recieve their allegedely. And they are now encrypted.

Yeah they were of amusement, now with the age of internet, email, msn & SMS maybe not as much..
I used to run circa 400w through an Amtron A99 iirc.

I don't find Ham Radio boring, got good friends all over the world now, Met a few of them too in my travels.
Its a bit of an achievement when you get a contact to the West Coast of the USA the long way round the world on 80m.

Another Amateur here (M0)!
Right then...
CB: Making a little bit of a comeback due to it's deregulation... People are hooking them up to the internet so you can speak to people much further away through a repeater. Probably though you'll just speak to truckers and bored housewives . Oh, the antennas will make your car look like a dodgem!
Police: Pretty much all gone digital now (same as Fire and Ambulance). IIRC it's on the Tetra system?
Amateur: If you're into technical stuff and like buggering about with electronics and antennas, it's a really rewarding hobby. You have to be comfortable/cool enough to accept being called a sad looser geek from time to time, but it is quite good fun when you've made yourself an antenna and you use it to chat to some dude from Moldova or some equally random country.
Just my 2p!
