Default Changing the forks on my Giant VT2

Question for the MTB experts on here!!

I bought a Giant VT2 in the summer and I like everything about it except the front suspension. Can anyone recommend a decent fork to change it for? The standard one has 120mm of travel - can I increase this without any ill effects? Also, is it easy enough to DIY or should I get a shop to do it?

Thanks

Can't comment on which to buy, I think it changes every year anyway, with the new models being FAR better than the older ones

The names PACE, Rockshox etc come to mind. I use PACE rigid carbon forks for lightness on an MTB, preferring it to the suspension route, but most of my riding is on roads or tracks anyway, so who needs suspension? My Ti bike comes in at sub 22 lb, and my lad's Scandium one at sub 21lb

DIY is easy enough so long as you can measure properly and use a hacksaw to cut a tube straight across.

A decent bikeshop, if you buy from them, will fit them for next to nowt anyway.

Oh, and as Alcazar says your LBS may well fit for free if you buy from them.

I did some shopping around and got my Reba Teams from and fitted by my LBS (Local Bike Shop) for the same price as buying off the 'Net and then paying ~£30 for fitting.

Just sold my last *solid* bike - was a nice GT Zaskar LE, never weighed it but could easily pick it up with one finger as a little party trick

Did you say the word hacksaw? Holy moly - I'll get the shop to do it!!

I've been reading up a bit and it seems the Marzocchi All Mountain range are v good.

It's not so much the hacksawing bit thats scary. You will either need to use the old headset from you current forks, in which case you need to get the crown race off, £££ for the proper tool or use a drift, screwdrivers, hammer etc. but easy to wreck it. Or if changing the headset you need a drift, hammer, etc. to get the old one out and ideally a headset press (£££) to get the new one in, or blocks of wood and the hammer again. Mucho potential to **** your frame and possibly the new forks. That said I'd probably have a go

Get your LBS to do it!
