I think this in in the hignway code, something like up to 30cm no need to do anything if over you must mark with red flag.

How much longer is it?

I know the rules on if you are transporting boats is you have to put a special warning triangle if its longer than 2 metres overhang.

I transported about 20 pieces of 4.8 metre 4 x 2" wood about 20 miles in SWB sprinter van (2 metre load lenght so a 28 metre overhang!) and had no problems except when turning on corners (very dangerous) I wouldnt fancy going on a motorway though as I have only ever seen up to about 50cm to 1 metre over hang coul be asking for trouble.

Just tie a big piece of red fabric round it, tie it down securely (so you dont ever have to stop) and drive slow and sensible ive done it many times, otherwise give the DVLA helpline a ring they will probably know.
