Go back in time and spend it a sweet shop, bet you could get loads for that.
Bring some back and give them to whoever started the thread about sweets getting smaller, two birds one stone ...

Surely the 'one shilling' coin is the same (in size and value at least) as the old 5p? Seen loads...
They were circulated up until the old 5p was withdrawn in 1990 IIRC - so there must be some very young folk on here if they've never seen one!

I think they were allowed to circulate concurrently with the old 5p coin but eventually the old shilling was withdrawn as legal tender, same as the old tanner or sixpence.
I miss that coin - it was perfect for saving up in a big whisky bottle. Oh, and the thruppenny bit.

The Shilling (value 5p) and the Florin (value 10p) were allowed to circulate as legal tender until the new smaller 5p and 10p coins were introduced (and the old 5p and 10p coins retired). was that about 10 years ago? The coin that Mick has may be worth more than its face value as up until sometime around then Shilling coins were made with a high silver content.

My dad's a coin collector, so I've asked him for you Micky.
Unless it is in absolutely mint condition it is worth less than it's face value. As it has no been out of circulation for more than ten years, the Bank of England will no longer reimburse it, add to that the fact that there are so many still in circulation, from every year they were minted, that collectors are spoilt for choice and you have a non-existent market for it.
PS Re the silver content, the value of the silver in it is considerably less than the costs attached to recovering it So unless you're literally in posession of a Ton of them, nobody is going to be interested.
So drop it in some liquid clear acrylic, let it set, and use it as a paperweight

There is a Florin with George V on the back which was minted in solid silver, so my dad told me, as he used to collect notes and the odd coins, I think it was a 1947, got bundles of normal shillings, florins (two bob bit) and even old Pennies which my sister and I used to mess around with as kids! now my kids play shop with them.
