I always find the decayed remains of a brockwurst sandwich on the back seat is a dead giveaway. That and the swastika shaped air freshner dangling from the rear view mirror.

Be very careful because vehicles damaged in Germany are commonly sold for salvage in France and Belguim with their original (pre-accident) registration documents. Vehicles that have suffered chassis-leg damage cant be repaired in Germany, so this leads to a lot of salvage being sold in the above countries.

Add Poland to that list of countries, the amount of Polish registered Transit vans that I see towing mashed BMW/Audi/Merc`s around Germany on their way to be repaired in Poland is frightening.

Dont even get me started on the Poles! They used to outbid you for every salvaged German Porsche 968 and then drive back into Germany. By the time they got to the Polish border theyd stolen a similar car and ringed it..... If youd ever wondered why the road East was littered with abandoned, badly crashed Porsches sans their build plates, VIN numbers and every secret number and sticker, now you know!
