A gadget im after crops up regularly on ebay, but nearly all sales state that the item would be shipped direct from hong kong/japan/singapore etc.
Occasionaly, one crops up from a british seller posted from within the uk, but these are always 40-50% dearer.
Technicaly, I should have to pay import tax on it if I get it from asia, but in reality, what are the chance of it being stopped by customs?
What is the rate of import tax?
The item costs about £120, so £150 including shipping from Asia, and the ones for sale here all cost £200+ then postage too.

Thats assuming its sent!!!
i bought an item .. usally ships within 7-14 days...
bought on 8th aug... still waiting... after contacting paypal, they have a tracking number from the seller, which just states left hk... yet when i asked the seller for this i get blanked.....
and i payed additional for insurance... no joy there....
the seller is now saying he will resend items if i drop the paypal action.... wtf..
what you may have for the uk one is a seller/reseller.... they dont have the item but buy it in from HK with your money and chatrge you a markup!!

I've bought a few small things like camera batteries and hand held batteries etc. All came through alright. I can't work out how they can make a profit on stuff for 1 p (like ipod skins, chargers etc) with a 4.95 postage.

Well, I have found a seller who has them shipped from Singapore for a decent price. He has very good feedback and large proportion of the feedback os british customers who bought similar stuff, so I will give it a go.
No doubt you will hear all about it if it goes wrong

Check the seller's feedback.
I bought a lovely brand new digital vernier guage for 1p plus 9.99 postage, thus avoiding any import duty or VAT. Bargain!

its a HIT and MISS,
i got a lot from Asia,
all have been sent, but sometimes expect dodgy fake stuff,
ask them to half the value when sending it,and get it sent by EMS,
avoid the larger co. like DHL, and the other one, (i forgot the name big brown van, they're the worst)

I've bought an STI Intercooler and Steering Wheel from a seller called RHDJapan, with no problems at all.
Had intercooler sent surface mail, took 4 weeks and I received the steering wheel 4 days after I paid for it.
And I never paid a penny import duty.
Just check the sellers feedback, that what it's there for.

I bought a GPS reciever off ebay a few weeks back and it said the item location was London. Got it and it had been sent from the far east somewhere. Mis-leading but I had no problems and it arrived 3 days after the end of the auction

Have to agree, ive had buoght stuff from HK and had no problems at all, turns up pretty fast and happy with qaulity of goods.
But would think twice for a seller with no or poor feedback.
