Default IT Consultancy

Anyone here do IT Consultancy?

Can you tell me how far you are expected to commute to a client site, or how long it will take you, and is your travel time deemed as work time?

I decide on a job by job basis. For someone paying £1250 a day I'll pretty much travel anywhere and will include all expenses. Someone paying £300 a day better be near by

When we have our guys onsite at a customer, they are expected to travel upto 2 hours a day. Beyond that, we put them in a hotel, which is charged back to the customer as part of the consultancy. It depends really on your circumstances - if you're self employed and as NotoriousREV says, if they're paying decent money you'll travel further. I guess it also depends on how long you expect the job to last.

Trying to get a bit of work/life balance. Worked for a small company doing implementation/integration work with some process consultancy surrounding Service Management, Itil etc

Worked on a project in London and it killed me, bored ****less, the client expected to see a face, ened up getting up at 5:30 to catch a 6:40 train into London, home by 7PM and missed seeing the children.

I left and joined a big managed serive provider, but hate it. On the plus side, travel time is classed as work time but it's all process, process process and I miss the techy bits.

May go back but wanted to get a perspective of others.

I count anything over 15 minutes travel each way as billable time.

I'd expect up to an hour to be reasonable. But I certainly wouldn't be getting in before 09:30...

How far am I expected to commute to a client site?
- Global. They do try to get us home for weekends though

Is your travel time deemed as work time?
- On a job-by-job basis, if we are travelling back on a Sunday night, we are not expected to turn up on Monday morning, etc.

I'm a perm for one of the larger UK IT consultancy houses, they "pimp us out" pretty much anywhere and everywhere

I used to do this a few years ago, but gave it up for an easier life (too many long hours); money was good though.

As Carl mentioned, anything up to 1hr was acceptable for me. It was getting home at a reasonable time in the evening that did me in.
