How do I get out of IT support?? I need a change :D
Hi all
Ive been doing IT support for approaching 6 years now. Ive had enough of it, my current job is boring the socks off me and I want to do something different.........moving in the company would be ideal, but Id have to stay here literally years and years more to do that due it being a real "long termers" company - vacancies just dont come up much. So Im going to move on,,,,,,,,
So how do I move into something different? Anyone done this? Im happy to stay in IT but would like to get into another area - sales /marketing maybe??
Or do I just need more variety / travel etc - my job is very desk bound.
Any ideas
Andy

join the club mate. I feel exactley the same. Been in IT since 1998 from leaving 6th form and it bores me silly. Problem is there arent too many jobs out there non IT that pay decent wage's without experince.
I cant afford to have a carreer change now...what with my mortgage &bills etc......
If i did want to change my job, my wage would drop the best part of 15k and i'd have to downgrade my house/lifestyle and start affresh. So im just along for the ride and trying to enjoy it the best i can.
TBH i dont think anyone finds there jobs full-filling/exciting (unless you a pornstar, stuntman etc).....same old crap with whatever job you have.
Tried IT sales???.....you need gift of thr gab though

It can be done, I left IT 2 years ago, after 5 years contracting and 15 years before that as an IT permie.
I'm now earning +15k a year more than my best ever permie wage. ( Just over half of my best ever contractors rate tho! )
Good luck.

surely you must have had to take a considerable drop in wage's for the first year though?
What do you do for a job now?
I need to know , ive been looking for jobs for a while and all the jobs that dont require experience dont come anywhere near my wage. (currently £29000??)
My sister works in IT recruitment and earns more than me....but she has the gift of the gab and i unfortunatley dont

Well compared to my final contractors rate, it was the same. So no, i didnt take cut.
I now run a small dept at Heathrow airport, looking at aircraft performance. The job involves liasing with out IT dept who "look after" the flight tracking system we use. As their all muppets, my It background comes in handy when the talking BS to one of my staff. So, 15% of my time is still IT, the rest is dBA's, npr's, SIDS, STARS, CDA's, ILS', MLS' and other bits. I suppose I was lucky in that i have a manager who was prepared to stick her neck out, because she thought I could do the job.
Luckily for both of us, she was proved correct!
Do I miss IT? Yes, but only because it was such a skive. Go on, get a proper job, you know you want to! ;-)

you will have to take a pay cut and change your lifestyle. It's simple, if you have no experience doing somthing you won't be paid as well.
It's a tough one, I'm in the same position, but, when all is said and done you made (as did I) a decision to take said career path and to change your mind x number of the years down the line will hit you financially, as would any decision where you change something financial I.e. an inestment which after all is wht you are to a company.

A drop in pay is peanuts in the long term...don't be miserable for the rest of your life just because you think you won't manage for the next couple of years.
Imagine yourself in one of the worst places in the world and compare THAT with what you have now. You can survive for a short time with so much less than you think....and you have the rest of your life to be happy.
Take a chance...bet it's worth it

you go in tommorrow and resign on the spot...
you walk out and think... what the f*ck have i done then you go down the job centre and panic..
seriously.. if you havnt thought long and hard what you want to do, dont do it,
yopu nedd your game plan sorted before you pull the plug...
decide your next career, and sort out / confirm entry into that, then choose the date and go..

I was bored with my job, not IT (wouldn't mind tho) and I got out, sold the house moved to France where I am now, done the house up and after 2 years I need a change again, at the mo Im trying to get back in my old firm (newspaper printing) failing that im buying a motorhome and sodding off somewhere for a bit.
Sell up, move abroad, buy a cheap house, stay there for a bit then go back.
