Would really need to know your budgets!
Zoo is a bit 70's. Animals all caged up, and it's getting a bit old & smelly now.
Daytime stuff? Escape down to Leith, and either visit her maj's old yacht, Brittania, or as I would do, stroll the Shore at Leith, taking in a nice lunch, followed by a trawl of the many quayside pubs.
Worry not! Edinburgh is alive with the Fringe, and next weekend it'll be swinging. Depends on what you are looking for, but if comedy is your thing, you're in luck. However, I'd be booking now, cos all the good stuff sells out quick.
If you fancy capturing some of the fringe atmosphere, the courtyard at the Pleasance is good (outside bar, etc). This is about 1/4 mile from the High St (Scottish Parliment end) up a small hill.
Want to see some stars? Hang out near the Assembly Rooms on George St. If your wallet is bulging, cross the road from the Assembly Rooms and have a drink in the Opal Lounge. A bit trendy (although getting on a bit now - pub has been there 3-4 years), and a quite pretentious, but if that's your thing....go for it. The beer is only £4/pint Prince Williams's favourite haunt when he was in Edinburgh.....
Pubs? Stay on George St (parallel to Princes St) if you want style.
If you want a bit more rough & ready, head down the Cowgate for a good mix of real world, less glam pubs.
Dance/R&B clubs? Pass....i'm sure someone else can oblige! Saying that, when the Festival is on, there's plenty of clubs going down.
If you have to go shopping, allow her to take in Harvey Nicks....to get it out of her system. That'll be the end of it.
Dining? Oloroso/Witchery/Rhubarb/Cosmo's.

There's a pub which I think is called Espionage - has different themed bars inside all based on James Bond / Spy movies...

The Establishment on a Saturday night has R n B music. This club is situated on Semple Street.
Take a city tour bus which gives you a feel for the city. you will be arriving during festival time so it will be really busy. Jenners is another great shop to take her to - to blow all your money. Definately go to Princess street, George Street, The Shore at Leith for shopping, drinking and eating.
The zoo has a mental polar bear who has gone crazy after years of being kept in a tiny area - don't go it is heart breaking.
Places of interest include the castle, holyrood palace, the new scottish parliament, the royal mile, dynamic earth, mary king's close and the royal yacht brittania.
A great night would be the witchery tour. You get taken around old edinburgh by a man dressed as a ghost who tells you ghost stories and other freaky stories of strange goings on from ye olden days. As you walk around the old town other ghosts jump out at you and try to scare you s***less - very amusing.

cheers guys. was in Cowgate earlier in the year for a stag do, so i think i'll try something different. think we ended up in the courtyard??
i'll warn her about the polar bear as she's an animal lover(not literally ) we're stopping just off princes street. might try the witchery tour as it sounds quite funny
the Rose street challenge sounds fun though i don't think it'll go down well with her especially if i get w@nkered

1. Cheating
2. Telling porkie pies
3. On the wrong street
4. Delluded
5. Alchoholic
6. Tee-Total
My guess is we can rule out 6.
The ghost tour is quite good fun - but don't be tempted to lamp anyone jumping out at you - they're probably part of the tour .

Most of the clubs are open til 5am-ish during the festival
I haven't been out in a wee while because of the bump, but nothing much will have changed. Stick to the east end (George Street) as the West end is full of Chavs and birds that wear white stillettos and hoopy earings so big I could fit my waist in them!
a few Clubs to visit are:
Why Not?
Po Na Na
Cabaret Voltaire
Any bar on George street will do you:
A few to note are,
Bar38
The Living Room
Opal Lounge
If the whole Tack and Townie/Single mum thing is your style then head for Lothian Road
