Lake District - your recommendations?
Any SN recommendations for hotels/accomodation in the Lake District?
Planning to head off with the wife for a little visit - last time I was there I was 12 years old, so good food and drink were probably not top of my mind Doesn't have to be top of the range - prefer friendly to swanky, and if there's a good pub handy too, so much the better!
Also, if you've got some thoughts on nice things to do and see whilst there too it might tempt me out of the pub for a little while
Thanks in advance!

Chose your location first - there's loads of B&B's if that's your kind of thing.....
Bowness is always good as is Windermere itself and Keswick.....
If you're going to be doing a lot of walking (well at least to and from the pub) then I'd probably plan your walks and then the accomodation...

We were in the Lakes on Sunday and it is soooo busy there at the moment, driving was a nightmare I've only been out of season before so it was a bit of a shock to see how busy it gets during summer.
My advice is to wait until the season is virtually over and then go when it's much quieter

Cheap and Cheerful and very nice is this place... Stayed there a few weeks ago with the doris... Handy if you live south of the lakes to cover all the quality roads on your way home (Kirkstone, hardknot and Wrynose passes etc) without going out of ya way...
Good beer and food and boattrips down the lakes nices pond ta booot!

We go up to the lakes about 5-10 times a year and have been going for the past 7 years so have seen a far bit of it.
I would stay in Bowness or Windermere. The Hydro hotel in Bowness is nice and about £100 per room per night. If you want a good B&B, try Crompton House near the Police station between Bowness and Windermere.
Go the Trattoria Ticino for a good Swiss Italian feast with good prices.
For drinks go the the Hole in'th wall for nice atmosphere and very good Baileys Latte's, as well as good pints
Worth a trip/walk over to Ambleside, about 5 miles and have a look around. Couple of decent chippy's down near the mountain bike shop/cinema, and a great art gallery as well. A few nice pubs as well there.
Keswick also nice, good Indian, theatre and lake.

As a local I have no idea about places to stay - although mate of mine often takes the wife and kids to Oasis at Penrith for weekends away.
Are you after a bit of walking & sightseeing? Maybe try Catbells nr Keswick if you're not after anything too strenuous, or scree running along the side of Wastwater if you are.
If you fancy giving the car (and brakes) a good workout - take a trip over the Wrynose & Hardknott passes (better take a second set of alloys!) great views along the way. oh and the A66 from Keswick to Cockermouth - dual carriageway twisties
Other stuff to do - William Wordsworth's homes in Grasmere & Cockermouth, Shopping in Carlisle, Rowing boats on Derwent Water @ Keswick or Windermere. Lots of decent golf courses too if you play - Keswick, Cockermouth, Penrith, Kendal or links at Maryport & Silloth (a bit of a drive from the central lakes though)

Avoid Windermere like the plague at this time of year, it's like Blackpool without the tower, entertainment, class, etc

all over, its all good. all lakes are naturally busy esp now & esp windermere
As said, windermere, coniston, Ambleside, ullswater, kendal etc...
(cant rember off hand which mountains) but theres some great magnetic mountains if you are into your walking/climbing. On a foggy day with yer compass spinning frantically makes for an interesting walk
Also the low flying jets, they look like ants when you on top of some of the mountains.
In some valleys (only accessible by foot) there are tank target practices Tank one side of the valley, target the other & if you stop to watch you hear the bang then you can see a shell wizz across

The Patterdale hotel is a nice place to stay for a night or two. It is a very good base for a walk up Helvellyn, which is a very good walk, but not for the feint hearted.
The Drunken Duck has had a very good reputation over many years, not been recently though....

Windermire and Ambleside are to Touristy just like going Southend On Sea with no sea all bright lights and Glitz with loads of Crowds.
Depends if that is your thing or if you want to try and get away to see some of the real sights in which case Hard Knott pass is a must and some of the more remote lakes like Enderdale water are well worth the effort. Though at this time of the year i would guess everywhere is busy.
as to where to stay i would recomend
www.monkhousehill.co.uk
I have been staying there 12 years though it is quiet and the Pub is driving distance, it is ideal to visit Carlise if you need to shop with Tesco's and a Subaru Dealership! and yet has easy access to the Nothern lakes and Penrith if you want a town that isnt to touristy. If you fancy a nice gentle walk to look at a water fall with a tea shop next to the car park try Aira Force next to Ullswater it is National Trust and also has loads of leaflets on their display about various other walks so you can find some thing suitable. All in all the Lakes is a brillant place for all types of Holidays the only thing is remember to take good waterproofs as it is green up there because it rains------- alot
And also watch out for the Camera vans as they are now collecting Taxes on various roads including M6, A6 and A66

Talking of the Lakes it appears that the speed camera lot there cant count! their Stats showed deaths going down where in reality they went up. dont suspect the truth will make the press not as media friendly as deaths going down is it.

Came back from the the lakes on wed.
If you want luxury, try the large hotel overlooking bowness (not sure on the name)
There are lots of Hotels, Inn's and B&B's to choose from. when we went up we need not of booked as their was quite a few vacancies.
