Roundup - works a treat & leaves no residue in the soil (which is why you can use the same ground for growing things a year later even though in this case you don't want to)... I even know a few eco-warrior-tree-hugger types who have used it on occasions. Me, for example.

Or throw a bit of old carpet or similar over the patch for a few weeks. Should knock out everything (well all above ground growth anyway) until extension starts?

Napalm.

Or Roundup if your local garden centre won't sell you any napalm

Another vote for Sodium Chlorate if you don't plan to plant again, which it seems you don't. It's harsh but effective and cheap as chips too.

So does Roundup, there is a bare patch on my lawn that bares testimony to this!

Months of meticulous care and attention, then go on holiday for two weeks.

Works every time with us

I use Path Clear - but don't get it on anything you want to keep!

So true

What makes me smile is back lawn with some bare patches but front driveway with concrete block paving has healthy grass trying to grow through the blocks!!

Round up is excellent - alternatively I can be hired to whiff my arm pits around said weeds...

Oh good, I'm not the only one who has weeds that thrives on Roundup then!
