I saw 2 Bears while on a mountaineering trip in Alaska. First was about 70ft away on a hike, but I had my hand on the Bear Mace rather than my camera. The second time was on a glacier about 5 days hike back to any sort of civilisation.
Moose are much more dangerous apparently as they're very unpredictable.

Full story:
Myself and friend took a day trip from Jackson Hole up to Yosemite, the park's pretty much closed in Winter unless you have a guide or are on a snowmobile trip. We were told we could go for a walk, but not to stray too far from the cleared paths.
Being a pair of idiots we walked along a cross country skiing track, all was well as long as we stepped carefully, an erratic step would leave you post holed up to your nuts. We sat down at a seriously beautiful river bank and took in the view, after a while you could spot various birds and the odd Moose just hanging out, all's well in Clarks world.
Time to get back to the car and the choice was to back track or hope that the CC Ski track was a loop, we took the loop. About half a mile further and there was our Moose, even better, it was Mummy Moose and baby was a right cutie. The river is on our right, the Moose on the left of the track. No worries, we'll edge up ever closer, I've dealt with cows before, they take fright and move out of the way eventually.
Myself in front we're now within 20ft of Mummy, baby takes fright and runs the wrong way, we now have baby in the river and Mummy to the left of the track. Keep edging forward Clark, Mummy will join the little one and we'll be on our way.
One more step and all of a sudden this dumb looking cow thing reared up what seemed like twenty feet out of the snow and let out it's bloody scary Moose noise! It was coming for us!! We both turned quick sharp and tried to run, no good, I remember looking over at my friend swimming in the snow and not getting very far. I think I was doing the same, but can only remember letting out some sort of panicked groan.
We didn't look back for a good ten minutes, I can't tell you how far this thing came after us, but I'm bloody pleased she decided we weren't worth it. Apparently Mummy Moose are very good at trampling people to death. We were very, very lucky.

If you parked up in the Canadian Rockies the bears used to come up to the car window and expect to be fed. Wasn't wise to open the windows though in case this great big paw got you by the throat!
