If they want to take control away from me then they can do the whole f%^&ing lot and I'll sit in the back reading a newspaper and having a cofee whilst the car takes me to work.

Agree with gizmo. If the car drove themselves there would be no speeding, massively reduced traffic and vehicles would move seamlessly amoungst each other getting us places much quicker without speeding. That I suppose I could support as long as there was lots of places petrol-heads could take cars for some banter. BUT, if any system is fitted to my car to slow me down I'll take however much money is needed from my account and seek the black market system to block it irrespective of whether that is legal or not. My view on this won't change in my lifetime.

SB, you would start a thread complaining that your speed limiter is not quite fast/slow enough, it would run to 30 pages until you realised the black box was in the wrong place, for instance in the headlining and was drawing in a lot of hot air......

Has anyone thought what will happen if all our cars are automatically speed limited? There will be no more speeding fines? I just can't see that happening.
Imagine the meeting going along the lines .. "we will automatically limit all vehicles speed there will be no more speeding" someone else "what about the money from all the speed camera, specs and gatso etc?"
Next day frontpage news after the internal meeting:
SPEED MONITORING SYSTEM SAID TO BE UNWORKABLE BY GOVERNMENT (or some other bull**** excuse!)

This is nothing new; the trials (which have been going on for ages) have been completed and, predictably, hailed as a success.
The trials themselves are, of course, deeply flawed: 20 identical cars driven by willing volunteers who presumably support the scheme, is in no way representative of normal traffic. That's not the point, though - the danger is that the Govt will go ahead and introduce the scheme regardless of its faults. The new boss at the Highways Agency, Derek Turner, is known to be in favour of GPS speed limiters being fitted to cars.
That's why it's critically important not to just sit back and hope it won't happen. Please, take the time to write to your MP about it. I have sample letters on both ISA and Road Pricing which I've been sending out to anyone interested, and I urge you to spend a few minutes of your time taking me up on the offer - or, even better, writing your own letter. If you've never done it before and would like some guidance on what you need to do, then I'm happy to help with that too. It's easy.

Too late for that, it's no surprise at all that the Road Pricing scheme was announced just after an election. We're stuck with them now for long enough for real damage to be done - we need to change their minds.
My letters are all a bit long and won't fit a PM - anyone interested, please send me your email address. Ta.

For those following this debate you may be interested to note the following from the anti-motoring lobby, errrrr, DfT:
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pns/DisplayPN.cgi?pn_id=2005_0076
Note that in order to qualify it basically says that councils have to introduce road use charging and that the amount available to them each year will eventually rise to 2.5 billion!! In other words this is a bribe to councils to start introducing road charging ASAP.
Those who said this would cost billions are, clearly, correct and the government have just made it clear that they are willing to make billions available to get it introduced.
Alistair Darling said:
"Our thinking on national road pricing has developed further. We are now taking forward work on a national system of road pricing, so it is right for us to take forward the plans for distance based lorry charging as part of the wider work on national road pricing - to work for a single comprehensive, cost-effective system.
"So although the current procurement will not continue, we will continue to work with industry and ensure that we carry the full experience gained from the project into the wider work to develop a national road pricing system for cars and lorries."

Smoking kills millions every year - far more than road accidents ever would.
Ok so you might say its self induced but passive smoking kills 1000's of "innocent" passive smokers every year.
Yet smoking is not banned - why? because **** are heavily taxed and a huge sourse of income for the goverment.
Stick a limiter on my car- ridiculous. It would cause more accidents than it would prevent.
