Your looking at £300 or so and upwards. You can either go for a dedicated box like TomTom Go which gets some good feedback on here. If you want additional features, consider a PDA with TomTom. Dedicated fitted kit is considerably more expensive. I use a PDA with TomTom, works fine for me.

Garmin Quest - I got one for Xmas and I am very happy with it. Approx £325
Or for approx £600 + monthly sub you could get a top of the range Tom Tom with automatic re-routing to avoid realtime gridlock.

Tom Tom = Sat Nav software
You can get PDA's with a GPS built in - failing that you'll be looking for an external GPS...
Be aware that TomTom also do the Go range which are the standalone ones...

Price will dictate what you get Russ. The best combination of price and performance is probably the TomTom Go - this is a dedicated sat nav unit. The PDA based versions are fine as long as you don't intend to move the device from car-to-car - the cables and separate gps receiver can be a PITA.
Have a look at TomTom for more details. You should be aware that TomTom now do 3 versions of the 'Go' - 300, 500 & 700. I would say that the 300 unit would be perfect for what you want. You should expect to pay around £370 - certainly no more.
