War Of The Worlds.............LIVE......!
Always been a big fan of Jeff Wayne's rendition and wondered.......if it could be done, and properly, would you pay to "see" it at a theatre?
Me and some fellow muso's are seriously considering giving it a go, obviously with sponsors with some financial backing.
Also need a shed-load of musicians to pull it off. Surely, if done correctly, it could sell world-wide.
All thoughts would be appreciated.
Si.

Might have trouble getting the rights off Jeff Wayne to perform it though. Could be interesting, although it would take some very inventive staging to pull it off effectively.
Interesting to hear why you think it would need shed loads of musicians though. If I remember correctly the original only used a handful of people (about 8 or 9 excluding vocals).

Iain, I actually included vocalists as musicians, so I'd need:
1)Drums
2)Percussion
3)Lead Guitar
4)Rhythm Guitar.
5)Keyboards - 2 off.
6)Bass guitar
7)Brass section - at least 4
plus lead vocals, narrator, probably at least 2 or 3 seriously talented support singers.
The "problem" with performing this live as with any well mastered studio LP is capturing the depth of the layering, especially with guitars and keyboards. WOTW was way ahead of it's time, not least as far as production was concerned, although I appreciate the recording and mixing times involved, I doubt the same effect could be captured live without a brass section and dual guitars and k/boards.
This is a very serious idea, nothing more at this stage, but I will persue the copyright angle first.

Ah fair enough
Good luck with it, and let us know if you decide to proceed, especially if you can find a narrator with a voice like Richard Burton

Where can I get tickets?
Absolutely love Jeff Wayne's WOTW, there was an open air WOTW concert in Reading last year (or was it the year before) that I missed, and was absolutely gutted.
So, when it comes to "bums on seats", mine will be there!!

A concert is easy a full scale production is not.
I was envolved in some early production meetings for this. We had Jeff Waynes approval etc... But the numbers would just not add up!!!
It is a huge undertaking and not an easy one. Think the Reading concert thing maywell have been a half way house spin off of our meeting, but I was not involved in that one...

I have ALWAYS dreamed of being able to stage War of the Worlds live. Sadly I have no musical talent, no financial backing and no contacts in the world of theatre!
I've dreamed of it being a technical/ real life set up embracing the whole theatre (rather like a high tech Starlight Express). Screen backdrops with dancers on stage and lazers (death ray) etc shooting over the audience
Casting it is a favourite passtime when I'm alone in the car too long. Obviously many of the orginal cast are no longer with us. I thought perhaps Patrick Stewart in the Richard Burton role. James Blunt would be a good David Essex (I know he's not dead, but he is getting on a bit!). I've never been able to find a suitable Phil Lynot though - maybe Robbie - the preacher needs to be a bit bonkers!
Would need lots of dry ice too......

I'm pleased to see that the idea is well received but flabergasted to see that people would expect famous people to be involved.............NO WAY..!
Probably cost way tooooo much, I'd prefer to use semi-pro musicians like myself and virtually unknown talent.
I'm extremely lucky that I'm in an established tribute band and therefore know alot of fellow tribute acts.......especially Phil Lynott....
I don't think I'm actually aware of just how big a feat this could become BUT, I am aware of just what an epic it could be!!!
I'll keep all interested parties updated accordingly.
Thanx for the interest...............OOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAA
