Default Car Polishers

Any good? Enjoy waxing the car by hand but contemplating getting a polisher, are results better? Any risks to paint in using them?

Cheers

The same risk of a piece of grit being caught in the pad as if you're polishing by hand. The only difference being that instead of one sweeping scratch that you get with a hand job (ooer missus) you're going to get a nasty swirly scratch from a polisher before you have time to react.

seems some ppl here belive that if you dont go via sweat and pain you havent really cleaned the car!

I clean mine with Flash system...when i polish it i use a power polisher....stunning results in very short time.

I used to do it the long way........NO BETTER, just longer!

I'd say def. do not use a sponge. Get a wash mitt and some terry towels. Much better and less risk. Sponges just clog with dirt and scratch to buggery.

IMHO

The electronic polishers are only useful if you're trying to restore the shine on faded paintwork with a cutting agent. Otherwise use elbow grease and a soft cotton cloth.

If you do decide to get a polisher I have a Porter Cable orbital one which is reckoned to be the very best. It's American, 110volt and has a 240v transformer with it as well as a box of assorted polishing pads. I believe that the whole lot cost £300+, it has been used once and I'm thinking of selling it if you want to make me an offer.

You have to make sure that you dont let it get too hot or it will damage the paint, so dont hover in one place. Also it depends how critical you are, be wary of fine swirls. Car has to be completely clear of dust or dirt.
Use a sponge but use a Decosol sponge (available fron Halfrauds) they are the only sponge designed for car cleaning. Always wash the dirt off first, with a pressure washer if possible (not too close) if not use a hose. Keep the sponge clean and dont just leave it in the garage to pick up dust, put it in a plastic bag.

Not if you buy the right sponges direct - yes agree the cheap ones from halfords do, but i get mine direct from the US - i got the details from one of our bodyshops and they use them. Agree though the mitts are good, have one of them also.
