Default Good roads for driving nr Reading?

Got a mate heading over at the weekend in a R34 Skyline but as I dont own a scoob anymore (and have moved since I did) I dont really go for a blast anymore and therefore dont know of any good roads around here.

Anyone from the area suggest somewhere good to go?

Cheers,
Simon

Take the run from Basingstoke to Alton

Trouble can be with Sunday drivers, but get a clear run and its BRILLIANT!!

Does it have to be around Reading or would you go a bit further away? The road from the back of Henley towards Dorchester (A4094 or something like that) is a good road, however if the sun is out it will be full of bikers (I'll be one of them!) so you might struggle to really enjoy yourself. Plus, the police sometimes sit down one particular piece of road in Dorchester as they like to catch the bikers speeding. There are big signs though warning you to watch your speed on that section of road (it's a big wide stretch of road and it just asks for you to speed, so don't! )

Would you be going for a run during the day, or perhaps early in the morning/later in the day? If it's later in the day then the A339 from Basingstoke is a good road, and if you stay on it as opposed to getting off on to the A31/A32 at Alton it becomes the B3349 which takes you towards Hook/Odiam (sp?!). The A339 is full of corners, short sprints, longer sprints/sweeping corners, and the B3349 is just full of sweeping corners and you can certainly make progress down that section of road. It also tends to be a lot quiter than the A339. This road again gets lots of bikers on it, and hence doing it later in the day as the Police won't be hiding in any more bushes, etc...

What road is that so I can take a look on the map?

Any route with a nice pub for lunch is also a bonus

Simon,

It's the A339. Just thinking about it a bit more, you could always get off at Alton, then jump on the A31/A32 and then head towards West Meon. That's another good piece of road, and once that is done turnaround and then get back on to the B3349.

Best road is the B3051 Kingsclere to Overton then back again.

At the present 05.00 hours is the best time.

Turn right at traffic lights in Overton, past laverstoke Mill, turn right to Watership Dowm Pub.

Used to be good food etc, have not been back for a little while.

Cheers. Will take a look. Only prob is getting down that way. Either the A327 or the A33 both of which are slow slow slow.

The undoubted winner is the A417 across the Berkshire Downs from Streatley to A34 (& back & repeat *10) , a stunning road with great views, big sweeping bends & some decent hills too.
(Go for lunch at the Old Bell in Aldworth (heaps of CAMRA awards) for a timewarp pub experience.)

I think this stretch is sounding more preferable as less time to get there. I noticed a new subaru dealership in Basingstoke last time I was there. Next to the Jag garage at the top of town (above festival).

And buses. Once through Alton, try the A32(?) down to Fareham(ish). There's more scope for overtaking.
