Alicante 20minutes from Benidorm!!???!!....Even I can't manage that doing 160kph on the toll road
40mins if you hammer it. About an hour if you take the N332 during peak times.
Alicante has a good beach which links on to San Juan which is quieter. El Campello is a bit busier, all with your typical beach front bars and shops. All linked by a train and buses. Most of this area is still mainly Spanish still, but you can find the odd English dive dotted around. So don't expect many locals to know English. The city is great, there are lots of bars, shops and restaurants dotted around everywhere, so I can't really say where the hot spots are.
