About to read The Da Vinci code, but should I . . .
. . . read Angels & Demons first?
I found "The Da Vinci code" lying around the house (I think my wife started it but didn't like it!), so I thought I should join the other 99% of the population & give it a read.
But i beleive that Angels & Demons is the book that first introduces Robert Langdon, so should I read this one first, or is there no real follow on between the 2 books???

DV Code is superb, I really enjoyed it. I'm now reading Angels & Demons, and I wish i'd read it first tbh.
Both good books, and A&D is quite apt at the moment with the pope business.

Both great books, and totally seperate stories (I read dv code then angels & demons). DV code does follow on, but only in the fact that the same main character is used in both. There is no reference to Angels in the Dv code as far as I can remember.

I read Da Vinci code first then Angels & Demons. Doesn't matter which one you read first - they're just good adventure stories. You won't miss out on any intricate plot lines or anything. Bit like not watching Die Hard 2 in case Die Hard 1 needs to be seen first.

Whilst there is no direct reference to Angels & Demons in DVC, there are points where DVC refers (in vague terms) to the events from A&D, and also mentions about Langdon's interactions with Vittoria.
Therefore, if you have both books to hand and you're going to read both, I'd say read A&D first. However, it won't spoil A&D to read them the other way round if that's more convenient.

I've read all four Dan Brown books.
The main gist stays the same, the story differs on the face of it but the underlying "hero/ine gets love interest after defying the odds" reamins the same
I think he researches well & they are well put together but slightly boring in the detail. What I do like is that he makes you think about what is going on.

and take 45 minutes to read the chapter-by-chapter summary - then use the time saved to do something more enjoyable instead.

I'd rate it as enjoyable complete tosh Time to unplug the brain and just enjoy a good (if somewhat unbelievable) adventure story.

I think I started with Digital Fortress,Deception Point then Da Vinci code. It wasn't until I got the end of the Da Vinci code where I found a precis of Demons and Angels. There isn't a lot to be gained from reading them the right way around, just the odd hint into Langdon's behaviour and phobias.
I enjoyed the books as a work of fiction although they do die out in places

I bought this in Borders on saturday:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...590238-0611818
Haven't got very far through it yet, but it's pretty interesting considering recent events in Rome. It basically seperates what bits of A&D are fact, and fills in loads of detail about the Pope, the Vatican and Papal history/elections. It also speculates where Dan Brown got his inspiration for the made up bits.
What makes it particularly interesting for me is that it was written in late 2004, and speculates on an upcoming Papal election "if" JP2 were to die. So all of the current favourites/contenders are mentioned in detail. It also fills in the detail of what's going to happen (procedurally) with the upcoming Papal election.
I'm not a religeos nut, but I find it all very interesting from a historical perspective.
Thought A&D was good too, for a fictional book.

On the subject of Dan Brown books, I've almost finished reading "The Rule of Four" (can't remeber the authors names) which is tagged as "The Da Vinci code for people with brains"!!
Pretty good, bit less "trashy" - none of the characters are devestatingly beautiful!!
Good read though!!

If you go into all the history (actual and possible), circumstantial & anecdotal "evidence", alleged witness reports etc supporting conspiracy theories relating to the illuminati, it would be quite a long book (Sky spun it out into an hour+ documentary without using all the possible material).
If it summarised everything that can be categorically proven about the illuminati's activities today, I think you'd need a pretty large font to fill the first page!

Why do people always come into book threads screaming how crap book a or book b are
If we all liked the same stuff, life would be boring. I'm by no means a book worm, so i found DVC entertaining to read. I also like the fact its set in Paris. If I want to read hard hitting factual stuff then i'd read a bloody newspapper
