Default Ebay - am I too suspicious??

Bought quite an expensive item on Ebay. Guy has low but positive feedback.

Wanted payment by cheque but I arrange before I buy to use Paypal and he gets an account. Wait a couple of days and ask where/when item sent.
He replies been a holdup will post today(Monday). Today I get an email from him saying really sorry but the item when he went to post it was not working so he'd put it in to be repaired. When fixed he'll send it to me and if I'm happy I pay him, if not send it back to him.
Can't refund on Paypal as its a new account. He'll do a bank transfer to give me my money back. I say no just send me a cheque. Am I being too suspicious here or am I missing something. The guy seems genuine but.....

Hello

I don't think I would want an item found to be faulty.

If it was me I'd be a bit suspicious too!

Have you had a look at your Paypal account, is there not a way to cancel the payment? or why can't he just pay you back with Paypal?

Because his account has just started(to accept my payment) he has to wait to verify his card when his credit card statement comes with a 4 digit verify code.(he's right by the way). He had already taken the cash out so is unable to refund as no card backup at present. Complex but he's not bullsh*tting there.
Not worried about the item not working as I think the battery just needs changed. This is why I paid by Paypal so if a prob either Paypal or my CC company can refund. Done it twice so far.

the best thing to do is ring him up and ask if you can pick the money up and see what he says

No he has nothing else for sale. Has only sold a couple of things (£50) over the last week.
What I'm wondering is if he has stiffed me then why is he bothering to tell me why he's not sent it yet etc. It's not as if he's selling loads of things and is worried about his account being stopped. As said above if I get no joy I'll just contact my credit card co who'll do a chargeback if Paypal don't act. He's got till monday.
Cheers

I had a similar thing happen to me on Ebay.
Bought 2 Walbro fuel pumps from the US which didn't arrive. I emailed the guy many times, with no joy - as well as getting in touch with Ebay. Did a chargeback on my CC and got the cash back.
Then got an email from Paypal - who are owned by Ebay - asking why i did a chargeback!
I dunno how you would stand since the guy has not, as I understand it, fully verified his Paypal account.

Good luck.
