Overweight Policemen - WTF
I have started a new job working closely with the Police(not a policeman) dont scrutinise!
I have noticed that there are so many overweight people working in the police, when i was 18 i wanted to join the Police(as many kids do) and they had strict guidelines about fitness, weight and height.
If i were a thief I would be quite happy with what i have seen, cause these policemen arent running after anybody(cause they cant!!), maybe the stereotyped U.S. Doughnut eating policeman has broken through the barriers...

Most of the podgy ones I see on the beat are volenteers.
The real coppers round here tend to be dwafs!
When the silent alarm tripped at work and whilst trying to cancel it with the alarm company (admin cockup with the phone numbers/passwords ) 2 paddy wagons and 2 cars turn up....and I get surrounded half a dozen 5ft coppers about to arrest me on sight. From the size of them, it probably would have needed that many to get me on the floor too

I know one too. He was "Big boned" before he signed up, but now he is so vast that small objects tend to settle into a geosynchronous orbit around his middle
Oh and 14 cows died for the privilage of making his utility belt!

or give them all bikes, we can't be too harsh on them
I used to do work at the Police training college for Scotland. Didn't see any overweight police there. A lot of the training staff were ex-miltary, so the training is geared in the right direction.
Do they have to pass an annual fitness test like the armed forces?

I think we all should be fitness tested yearly in the force, how do you expect to catch anyone if you can't run 100m. As said earlier ARV crews are tested yearly on fitness as well as a medical, not got a problem with that, the role demands fitness levels higher than that of section officers.
As far as i know the fitness test standard was lowered recently to encourage more recruits, what next?!?!

It should be free, like the armed forces. The meals should reflect the amount of activity though. Just like the forces, there should be regular fitness tests. If you let yourself slip and get too fat or too out-of-shape you should be forced into additional phys until you make the grade.
In the forces, you get a fry-up and cereals for breakfast followed by another 2 large meals. The difference is you need all the calories for the amount of exercise you do throughout the day.

I know a lad who trained like a madman so he could walk through the physical tests to join the plod. He breezed it as expected. I can imagine all new recruits doing their upmost to be trim for the physical test.
Thing is presumably that test is set not only to ensure recruits are healthy because their medical records prove that. The test must help establish if these people can run after criminals and catch them...
Clearly a 25 stone dohnut munching 40 year old cant do that - so every year they should have to take a physical. If they fail they are forced to do community policing like talking to school kids about the wrongs of crime etc. Failing that they are sacked and lose their pentions etc...
If I become unable to do my job over a period of time I would be sacked - So I you aint doing 8 minute miles plod folk - its time to change vocation....
