Have you ever lied on your CV before?
Got away with it? Or were you caught out?
I have always been honest on my CV; I am proud of what I have achieved in the past. I'm sure most of you are too!
I feel I am destined for better things, and with what I have already achieved and am currently working towards I know I will get there eventually.
But do you sometimes feel you can do one better and when rewriting your CV get the urge to tell the odd fib or two to 'get your foot in the door', so to speak?
If so, what did you tell porkies about, was it on a massive scale and did you 'get away with it'? Please own up as I am interested in the response this will get - even use an alias if you must!!
Thanks!!

Yeah - I was applying for my first job after university. It was for a windows 95 rollout. I had the job spec before I 'tailored' my CV. I had walked past a PC runing Win95 once, so I said I had extensive experience installing and troubleshooting. The people interviewing me hadn't seen it or used it, so I waffled my way through interview. I got the job, arrived with the rest of the team to start the rollout, thinking I could pick it up from the others as we went along. Turns out they had the same plan Fortunately no-one in the company had any idea about the techie side of it, so we spent two months learning Win95 at their expense. SInce then I have been 100% truthful

A mate of mine was at a job being paid £45k base, £60k OTE
Lied like hell on his CV & secured a £85k base, £140k OTE job.
He can bull**** for Britain though & is very very good at it.
Give him a few months, they will see he cant do the job & he will get sacked though !!

Judicious truth-stretching can be employed to cover most eventualities. I can and have found out about significant lies and fired people for it, but expect people to routinely overstress their own importance at interview time.
Basically, exaggerate a little, but don't actually tell honest-to-god untruths. Even if you think you won't get caught out, you might well do in years to come, and who wants to be fired over a stupid and unnecessary porky from several years earlier?

Yup I totally agree with you!
I didn't even exaggerate, filled in the blanks and sent it off. As you said, theres no point if youre only going to get caught

That's OK, so have I - roughly one for every job I've ever applied for!
Companies expect that you'll write a CV that stresses your experience that's relevant for the job - and if you don't, you're making them read through stuff that's irrelevant. That's not a good idea.
I'd never actually lie, though - you'll be asked about the things you write, and if the interviewer is any good then you'll be exposed in no time. Maybe it depends on the type of job you're after, but in my field (engineering) it becomes very obvious to the interviewer very quickly if you don't know what he's on about.
Make sure you know what the job actually is that you're applying for too. I once interviewed someone straight out of university, who had applied for a job as a junior engineer (fair enough) but spent the whole hour trying to tell me how he wanted to run a team of engineers rather than actually be one. Full marks for ambition, but 0 out of 10 for common sense. (We already have the senior staff, dumbass - who do you think has been conducting the interviews? You have no experience at all, who are qualified to manage?)
Needless to say, he didn't get the job

You shouldn't lie on your CV, but you should exaggerate.
When I interview people, I expect them to have "jazzed up" their experience and qualifications. I certainly have in the past and as long as your referees aren't jobsworths, and you don't tell people you got a masters when you actually dropped out at 11 plus...........

My sister has lied in the past about a job she was fired from about 12 years ago.
She lost a few jobs following that when they found out she had lied.
If she had been honest from the outset, she may well have found it difficult to get her next job, but once she had one, she wouldnt have had to worry about being caught.

Yep, my CV has a couple of non-existant A levels on it. Been in my chosen career for 12 years now and only once was I asked to produce my certificates (I didn't take that job).

when i worked out that most people did, i did so myself
all my gcse results had a small tweak
and where i knew that my previous area manager had left and such, my job title got slightly upgradeded.
counts for nothing now as i am self employed but it was fun while it lasted
its a dog eat dog world
