Recommendations for portable digital storage media
Thinking of geeting a portable unit to store photos on, as opposed to buying more memory cards (which seem to go and down in price like a flamin' yo-yo).
Have got a 300d, and with the resolution whacked up, it goes through the cards like a dose of salts.
I've seen a few around, Vosonic and Wolverine to name a couple, just wondered if anyone had any experience.
Reckon 20Gb should be enough for what I want, and I'm not bothered about being able to preview them on the machine, simply want somewhere to put pics whilst on holiday.
Cheers
Matt

Hi Matt, this is where I bought mine.
This Compact Drive PD7X looks pretty good, 20GB for less than £100
Or you can borrow mine

Jobo Giga 2 is approx. £150 and does the job nicely by all accounts.
But what you really want is the Epson P-2000. Lovely piece of kit, I wouldn't be without mine.
Cheers

Ian, that looks pretty good, any info on the battery life and performance?
Do you think it would download 3x1Gb Flash without running out?
Not too worried about viewing on battery but need to get stuff off cards while out and about.
How long would it take to copy a full 1Gb card?
Just as a comparison, XS sometimes does three but only if there are not many files and 1Gb usually takes about 20mins.
Not a good advert but it's for sale if anyone wants it...

HS,
I don't know any stats on the Jobo Giga, sorry.
But the Epson will do a 1GB card in approx. 6.5 minutes. I've managed to transfer 11 full 1GB cards before it starts to warn that transfers may no suceed due to low battery. The screen is wonderful though, has the look of a high quality printed image rather than being a screen. if you haven't seen one in the flesh, you won't understand.
Cheers

I thought the Epson one looked pretty good, but over priced as is the Nikon one too. Depends where you are going on holiday, but I went into a web cafe not that long ago with my USB Sync lead copied all the images to their and burnt them on a disc. Cheaper option!

Yeah, it was the Epson I was interested in, cheers for the info!
I've got a laptop and all that but ideally I want something I can:
a) dump files to quickly so I can re-use cards
b) do a quick first cut to get rid of the rubbish
C) maybe use as a music player while away on trips.
Two last queries if you've got a mo Ian, is there a facility to copy stuff from the disk to the card?
Is the movie conversion software any good?
Cheers

HK,
Dumping files quick ? Yes, well, I still use two cards, one dumping while the other is in the camera, but that works for me. Doing a first cut is exactly what I do while still out in the field. i.e. a break in the action, I will sit down and flip through images deleting the obvious chuff ones, some thing you can't do with the small screen on my camera. Easy to do with such a good screen. It does do MP3 music playback, but I don't use that, but I did try it when I first got it.
You can certainly copy stuff from disk back to the card, there is a facility within the Epson to do so. Again, I don't use it, but did try it.
Movie conversion software ? Didn't know it came with it. In fact, I've not installed the software at all as I use BreezeSystems Downloader Pro to pull images off the Epson when I get back to my desk (fully automatic once I plug the Epson in) which dumps them to PC harddisk and into my catalogue system. Maybe I'll install the software and have a look see.
Cheers
