Depreciation, whats the most youve lost on a car??
Seem to regularly read about people on here who've bought a new Scoob, then traded it in in a years time and lost 8k etc
Ive only ever owned 205 GTi's and on average theyve probably only lost 200-300 over about a year or so's ownership, some people on here seem happy to accept a loss of thousands?!!

Biggest losses I've taken on new cars:
£11000 in 20 months on an Evo 6
£15000 in 23 months on a Porsche 996
I can offset thoses losses against the £750 profit I made on an Astra GTE 16V I owned about 10 years ago and ran for 18 months

We know two things in life: 1) A new car will usually depreciate very quickly initally b) a saxo VTS will drop like a brick in value (esp towards the end of its life!).
Consider this: I bought a brand new VTS for 11,200 and did 30k miles in it in 1.5 years and then sold it for £7700. I then re-loaned and bought my MY99 impreza which was a 3 year old car at the time and therefore has done the bulk of the 'new car' value dropping. I bought it for £11200 and took her from 40,000 to 70,000 miles (30k) in 1.5 years. I then sold it for £7300 This shows IMHO how much the **** fell out of the classic shape market

New cars are the best way I have found of losing money. If I had invested all the money I had lost in depreciation into property I could probably retire by now. Biggest loss was on a MY00 Impreza, Bought for £21,309 and sold (after a lot of hassle) to a dealer for £12,650 22 months later. Thats a loss of £8659 or £393 before even working out the interest on top of that.
Learnt my lesson now and I would never buy a brand new car ever again. Using depreciation to my advantage I bought an Audi A6 last weekend. List price on this car was £25K and I paid £5.5K for it. One obsessive owner and it feels like new. The smoothest, quietest, best built car I have ever owned for the price of a new Daewoo Matix.

If you are going to buy a new car you need to choose the right one.
