Moaning over nothing?
My mums just got in from work and is moaning about two of her co workers. She says they used to work for a differant company within the parent company and were laid off after 20 years. They have now asked the company theyre all with now if they will take into account their service from the other company so they both have 25 years of service. So now they have 5 days extra holidays a year and have received a gift from the company (lol). My mums moaning saying they have gone against her and the other woman and that they have jeapordised their jobs now and theyre thinking of going to the union.
Is it just me or is this alot of fuss over nothing and most people would try and get their service combined??

If they have been working for the same company then they have been working for the same company, end of really, unless you are suggesting the are legally separate companies, but then surely they wouldn't have the parent company??

I've seen people at a firm leave after ten years and then come six months later and get continuance of service. It's a goodwill gesture and quite frankly if they were laid off in the first place its actually deserved in this case.
All IMHO of course.

Not sure I read it right but what has your mum lost out on? Just sounds like 2 other people who've been in the 'same' company for 25 years are being rewarded for a long time in service. Not a bad thing surely.

Re-reading the only thing I can see is that your Mum may be concerned that if the new company lays people off on a LIFO basis, these people will be safer than her. "Most" companies seem to work on a points system from what I have seen and keep those most useful to the company. While overall years are fine, it doesn't mean they are the best qualified in the new company or the most useful / productive. However, kicking up a fuss may well get your Mum to the top of the company's sh*t list of trouble makers.

same happens if you get made redundant at a company and then get re-employed immediately anyway. I think there's a touch of jealousy here - its never a good idea to find out other peoples' financial situation
