Question Buying a stolen/recovered car, whats the deal on Q-plates?

Im looking into buying a car which has been stolen recovered. I dont think its even got a V5, so I assume I would need to re-register it with the DVLA.

Thing is tho, will it have to get new plates, and become a Q-reg?? Havent seen any Q-reg cars around for ages, so Im not sure if this is still the case? Does it stay on the HPI register as having been stolen/recovered now??

You will need to apply for a V5 in your name but it will keep its current registration.

Thanks

So under what circumstances would a car have to have a Q-reg plate? Or do they simply not do these anymore?

when they cannot determine its original pre theft identify/age, they whack it on a Q

When my last car was reported stolen it was initially listed on hpi as being so. Once I had got it back it was removed. I don't know if this is always the case though

I had Q plates on my first ever car & never got pulled (had it for about 5yrs) - always used to get asked about it by people that saw it though

Q plates do get pulled more often the police think they are more likely to have stolen parts used during their rebuilds

A friend of mine had his taken off him never seen it for 6 months he ran a scrap yard and built it up himself so had no reciepts to prove most of parts were legit

got it back and had to start again !!
