These are the muppets that butter the bread then scrape most of it off again tightest sarnie makers ever, 1 pc of q-cumber, 1 lettuce leaf, 1 slice of tomatoe and bugger all salad cream

I used to run a sandwich manufaucturing company in Kent, so have a bit of input here...
No-one butters by hand anymore unless its a tiny little mickey mouse company - you use a buttering machine - its a hopper filled with butter or marg and a roller at the bottom. Anyway to answer your original question, the bottom half of the sarnie goes by on a conveyor belt and the filler grabs a handful of filling from a tub and plonks it on the sarnie base, so if you got only a half sarnie - it means that a) they missed and half got plonked on the belt or b) they only grabbed a small handful to start with.
You have to be a bit quick 'cos they go by at a speed of about 2 every 3 secs...
