Most of the major makes,
Kona, Trek, Marin, Orange (British but made abroad) Scott, Specialised, etc are good.
Try Leisure Lakes, good idea if you want a discounted bike is to buy last years model...

You can get some good deals at the moment on last years models provided you not too bothered about having the latest thing in MTB technology.
Avoid the temptation of cheapo full suspension bikes, go for front suspension only. Cheap full suspension bikes are heavy and won't last very long as components, suspension bushes, and bearings are skimped on.
Have a look at www.bikemagic.com - lots of links to retailers. Also worth picking up a copy of MBR from the newsagents.

Treks are pretty good from my experience, they have a lifetime warranty on the frames so if there's any defects they'll replace the frame for you. I worked as a mechanic in a Trek dealership for a while and there was never any major problems.
Don't forget about Gary Fisher too. They're owned by Trek and the same guarantee applies, I preferred the riding style of the Fishers, slightly more aggressive and nicer on the twisty stuff.
But not as fast as a Scoob. Obviously.
www.alpinebikes.co.uk if you're in Scotland....

A few months ago I took delivery of a Specialized Rockhopper '05 model (one of the first in the UK). Then had Hope disks fitted. Few complete bike manufacturers can match Specialized for money and componentry level. Highly recommended.
It was close call with Kona however . Just slightly too expensive for what I wanted.

Other ones to have a look at are:
http://www.leisurelakesbikes.com/
www.wiggle.co.uk
www.chainreactioncycles.com
There's a few more as well, but I really can't remember them....
Those tend to be quite cheap though.
