Wound healing-Are Pain Killers Detrimental?
I had surgery on my wrist yesterday for Carpal tunnel syndrome. They go in quite deep (amazing sensation being cut into with no pain, quite surreal ) and involves cutting into the tendon.
I've been prescribed Co-Codamol for the pain and I guess inflammation. To my mind if you dull/negate the pain and reduce inflammation surely your body doesn't respond as quickly to repair itself?
I'm 'happy' to deal with the pain and forget about medication if it helps accelerate the healing process (several weeks).
Any ideas?
Oh and I've typed this with my left hand only and it's taken ages

Co-codamol has no significant anti-inflammatory properties. Steroids delay wound healing, but they have no significant analgesic properties. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, aspirin are the two over the counter ones) have both anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, but don't delay wound healing.

Numbing the nerves isn't going to slow the healing process

By the way... how have they written the prescription? It may be cheaper to buy co-codamol over the counter off prescription unless they have stipulated loads for just one prescription charge.

I use Co-Codamol for migraines, usally 500mg paracetamol & 8mg codeine mine also contain caffiene to wake me up, they can be habit forming drugs, something to do with the Codeine. They are classed as illegal drugs in some countries, EG Greece. Co-Codaol has no anti-inflammatory properties, make sure you take the prescribed dose and do not take any other paracetamol based drugs whilst taking Co-Codamol.

I had this done 5 years ago due to hitting window beads on with my hand
Needless to say i use a rubber mallet now lol
Apparently it can run in the family as well which i find hard to beleive but my mothers had both hers done.
when i went in the ward was full of women and they say its uncommon for blokes to need it,did you find this?

Most pain killers shouldn't delay the healing process as they only stop the pain signals getting from your nerves to your brain - the only analgesic I can think that might is aspirin as it thins the blood. Co-codamol contains paracetamol and codeine (an opiate) so don't go mad on it !
