My dad took my brother to Reading Station for a train a few days back....he pulled up in a side street to the station, brother jumped out...dad drove off....10 secs max.

Today a photo of the crime and a fine for £50 arrives!!!

Apparently there are signs saying dont drop off etc, even so...seems harsh...how do they even prove the wheels of the car stopped?

Any escape route? (the ticket seems to be from a private firm given the camera/ticket job...not the council)

This particular site and company were mentioned on 5th Gear. They had a legal expert on who gave his opinions on it all, and I cannot remember what he said but I think he said to challenge it and I only wish I could remember why.

I don't know where you are talking about but I'm finding it hard to get my head around the no dropping off bit, parking I can understand but dropping off!!

I saw this on 5th Gear too - if its not the council, not the government, not the police then they will have to sue you for the money ................... not sure about the law here regarding owner or driver??

I live close to this place and I understand that dropping off and stopping was reaching epidemic proportions so something had to be done - yes, its a mallet to crack a nut but it seems to be working ................... why didn't he drop off on one side of this stretch?

I remeber this from 5th Gear, but can't remember the advice either. Something along the lines of the signs represent a contract between you and the landowner and by driving past the sign you agree to the terms and conditions, but the writing is so small that the legal expert said it would almost certainly not stand up in court.

Maybe worth checkng the 5th Gear website?

Blair's Britain mate. Criminalising the law abiding to generate revenue is what they are all about.

Tiggs said that he welcomes more cameras and other hi-tech means of control over motorists. Seems to me that he should be pleased by this incident as it reinforces all he claims to believe in. Instead he seems outraged by it. How strange.

what worries me is how private firms have access to protected data on DVLA to be able to send the fine in the first place, I thought this was government only that could access this ???

Anyone can request info from the DVLA, they will judge it on it's merits. e.g. you see a vehicle smash into your car and drive off, they'll probably let you have the info.

The signs say do not drop off. There are no ifs and buts -- the law's the law.
Unless they've introduced a new rule that says the law doesn't apply if it's only 10 seconds

Actually, there is no law that states those signs are legal as they are signs put up by the landowner. I could put a sign at the end of my drive saying "Speed Limit 2000mph" but it wouldn't make it legal

Yes but it's current legislation and the general 'climate' of criminalisation of the innocent for trival 'misdemeanors' that are the hallmarks of New Labour's policies. If only they applied that much creativity to tackling real crime.

Of course, there's a difference between dropping off, and the passenger getting out to check whether the strange noise you'd suddenly encountered resulted from the damage that their private road had done to your car . . . .

Indeed ...... and got his suitcase of tools out the back of the car to try and fix the £1000 of damage caused by the wrong tarmac being used, at that time an AA man was spotted in the station selling breakdown cover - so he ran into the station carrying his suitcase of tools .... when, amazingly, the car moved off suddenly repaired!?

Is that how it goes??
