Reading Station....£50 fine for 10 secs parking!

My dad took my brother to Reading Station for a train a few days back....he pulled up in a side street to the station, brother jumped out...dad drove off....10 secs max.

Today a photo of the crime and a fine for £50 arrives!!!

Apparently there are signs saying dont drop off etc, even so...seems harsh...how do they even prove the wheels of the car stopped?

Any escape route? (the ticket seems to be from a private firm given the camera/ticket job...not the council)

Oh, the irony....

PMSL.

:D

Tell them the car was being serviced on that day and you have no idea of the driver.

Scott W 18 December 2004 06:10 PM

This particular site and company were mentioned on 5th Gear. They had a legal expert on who gave his opinions on it all, and I cannot remember what he said but I think he said to challenge it and I only wish I could remember why.

Sith 18 December 2004 06:16 PM

LOL @ UB. :D

Petem95 18 December 2004 06:31 PM

Contest it, at worst you'll end up having to pay, at best you'll get let off.

I contested a 30quid fixed penalty for parking facing the wrong way recently and got let off.

Mog 18 December 2004 06:32 PM

I saw this on 5th gear and the road is private and not public so they can do what they want.

Don't drop off?? You serious? WTF is this country coming to?

I don't know where you are talking about but I'm finding it hard to get my head around the no dropping off bit, parking I can understand but dropping off!!

I'd have to fight that on the grounds of sheer twáttedness!!

dpb 18 December 2004 07:04 PM

sounds a good scam...................What else was the road being used for ..?

That is f*kin ridiculous.

To photograph you they must take photos every 15 secs or so all the time?

Private road?i thought they were all on country estates?

pslewis 18 December 2004 07:34 PM

Its quite clear when you stop ................

Someone gets out and isn't dragged along the carraigeway!!

I saw this on 5th Gear too - if its not the council, not the government, not the police then they will have to sue you for the money ................... not sure about the law here regarding owner or driver??

I live close to this place and I understand that dropping off and stopping was reaching epidemic proportions so something had to be done - yes, its a mallet to crack a nut but it seems to be working ................... why didn't he drop off on one side of this stretch?

Pete

paulr 18 December 2004 07:46 PM

" that dropping off and stopping was reaching epidemic proportions"

You mean there were too many people using the trains?

Tiggs, its a good job you weren't dropping off Pete...the time it takes to get his wheelchair out the boot and all that..

:D......

NotoriousREV 18 December 2004 08:01 PM

I remeber this from 5th Gear, but can't remember the advice either. Something along the lines of the signs represent a contract between you and the landowner and by driving past the sign you agree to the terms and conditions, but the writing is so small that the legal expert said it would almost certainly not stand up in court.

Maybe worth checkng the 5th Gear website?

Tiggs said that he welcomes more cameras and other hi-tech means of control over motorists. Seems to me that he should be pleased by this incident as it reinforces all he claims to believe in. Instead he seems outraged by it. How strange. ;)

andypugh2000 18 December 2004 09:06 PM

what worries me is how private firms have access to protected data on DVLA to be able to send the fine in the first place, I thought this was government only that could access this ???

NotoriousREV 18 December 2004 09:15 PM

Anyone can request info from the DVLA, they will judge it on it's merits. e.g. you see a vehicle smash into your car and drive off, they'll probably let you have the info.

carl 18 December 2004 09:19 PM

The signs say do not drop off. There are no ifs and buts -- the law's the law. :D
Unless they've introduced a new rule that says the law doesn't apply if it's only 10 seconds :D

This is a private road you imbecile, with private fines going to private funds - just what has Blair got to do with it????

As a true Tory I would have thought that enterprise was what you subscribed to??

You, Sir, are an idiot!!

Actually, there is no law that states those signs are legal as they are signs put up by the landowner. I could put a sign at the end of my drive saying "Speed Limit 2000mph" but it wouldn't make it legal ;)

On the contrary - you CAN do 2000mph on your own land if you wish!!

But, if you have a pond in your lawn and want to fish it, you need a rod license!!

Pete

Poor old Tiggs isn't getting a very sympathetic hearing is he! Come on guys, its not like he has posted unhelpful and provoctive replies to all your pleas for help in the past.... oh wait....

You're right, bad analogy. OK, I could put up a sign saying "all women must remove clothing past this point or be fined £10,000,000" but it wouldn't make it legal. I might try it though.

Yes but it's current legislation and the general 'climate' of criminalisation of the innocent for trival 'misdemeanors' that are the hallmarks of New Labour's policies. If only they applied that much creativity to tackling real crime.

As for being an idiot. My I suggest that those who are hanging by their fingernails should refrain from waving their arms around?

hades 18 December 2004 10:09 PM

Of course, there's a difference between dropping off, and the passenger getting out to check whether the strange noise you'd suddenly encountered resulted from the damage that their private road had done to your car . . . .

Indeed ...... and got his suitcase of tools out the back of the car to try and fix the £1000 of damage caused by the wrong tarmac being used, at that time an AA man was spotted in the station selling breakdown cover - so he ran into the station carrying his suitcase of tools .... when, amazingly, the car moved off suddenly repaired!?

Is that how it goes?? ;)

Pete
