Question AV question... modifying an existing DVDplayer..

I have a toshiba SD-200E
http://www.homecinemachoice.com/revi...ibaSD-200E.php
It was one of the first affordable players with component (not composite) video outputs.. yes, I know it's old now But I do like it..

It's still a great player.. the only problem I have is that it wont play and 'home' formats such as DVD-R/+R or RW.. wasnt a problem when I bought it. But I have been transferring home movies onto disc for archiving all those holdiays etc.

I thought about getting in touch with techtronics.. but it appears they are no longer trading- http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews747.html

Is it possible to get this player modified? - im loathed to lose the component video just to play home brewed DVD's.
Im using a very nice CoAx for the AC3/DTS out. and I have tried to put it through my mega cheap 'play anything' (but ****e picture quality) player, and the 5.1 output seems to be permanently disabled!! grrrr

any ideas folks? (and no- I dont want to shell out for another player..)

Have you tried Practical Hi-Fi? They did a sterling job multi-regioning my DVD.

Although I'd imagine a cheapo player will probably play them and work out cheaper than having your existing unit modded.

i think he wants it modyfying to play -r's not multiregioning.
Personally i've never heard of modifying a dvd player to play other formats.I wouldnt imagine theres much demand considering the price of dvd players now.

To be honest that capability is probably dictated by the laser unit itself rather than firmware or anything simple like that. If that is the case a new laser assembly will probably set you back more than a new DVD

ermmm. - I have the Tosh 330D - this plays *anything* - cost me £99 from Amazon well over a year ago - Tosh have now replaced it with the 340, which I have seen for £79

All tosh DVD's have component which is why I have mine.......

£79 aint worth trying to fix the original......

Was the 330D the one that kept cleaning up in the "Best Budget Player" awards? A mate bought one and he loves it.

Think it's about time I upgraded my old Pioneer (DV717) About 6 years old, still has a cracking picture but some of the newer stuff just takes it to the cleaners.

BTW I have to say I use to have a Pioneer 919 LD/DVD player that cost £1000 in it's time, I replaced it with an £80 DVD player and the picture quality from the Yamada was far superior to that of the Pioneer.

Audio was being done via a co-axial cable to an AV amp, which was just as good.

I have since replaced it with another Yamada player for another £80 in order to get DIVX compatibility!

No issues, just a fantasically priced player.
