Default Best car for learner driver, insurance too

Hi all

My other half is finally learning to drive, she is taking a week long course with a qualified instructor and then will get private practice with me (God help our relationship)

She will be buying a cheap (sub £1k) little car (Corsa, Micra) to practice in. Apart from the 2 cars mentioned can anyone else recommend a good car to learn to drive in (easy clutch etc).

Also what is the best way to insure the car, my NCD is applied against the Scoob, and i am getting quotes of about £400 for a 1.0 Micra with me as main driver and her as named driver (0 NCD)

Cheers

J

If you get her something a bit bigger to start with, say Escort sized, she'll be less frightened of changing later.

...unless that's your aim

Will she take her test in your car, or a driving school's?

My eldest bought a Clio as that was what he was going to take his test in with his instructor. We just drove all over in it for 3 months before his test. We went to college for him, about a mile via towns and villages 20 miles away, or via 20 miles of our town backstreets

He now has a 53 plate Ibiza 1.4, done 7k, absolutly lovely.

Alcazar

PS: insurance sounds OK, his was £528 TPFT, in my name, him as main driver, on a 1.2 Clio.

Take out the insurance in her own name, it will drop a fair bit after the first year, and she will start to pick up NCB. Churchill are decent for drivers with no NCB.

First cars are always tough ones to choose. You want something cheap, but not something that is going to keep conking out.
We got my mrs a K reg 1.1 Fiesta, paid about £700 for it, it lasted her 2 years and in that time the only thing that had to be replaced was the steering joing thing.

Fiestas are good cheap to run reliable cars, small and pokey, so easy for practasing them manouvers.
It might be worth looking around and maybe consider stretching the budget a little, get her something that will last a few years.
Just picked up a V reg 1.3 fiesta for my mrs, 26,000 miles on the clock, 1 owner, £1500.

Good Luck.

A Ford Ka is about the lowest to insure, and easily manouvred etc. But as was suggested, perhaps she should learn in a bigger car so that she knows what she's doing and doesn't get scared/clip things!

I got a second hand Ka for my daughter to learn on. She had lessons in a Corsa but finds the Ka easy to drive. I think it is a bit flimsey and you can't see the front end! Bloody Concorde shape! Insurance was good though at £358 with me as owner and 2 kids as named drivers. Steep excesses though. Fiestas, Escorts and Corsas seem to be the default for first cars though. I still like the old style Mini though! DL

look at what people learn to drive in. I learned in a corsa and it was a piece of pie.

The wife has a Ka. Great little car cheap to insure. OK, not the most refined thing in the world but she loves it.

I've only just passed my test recently and I bought a brand new Corsa for my first car. My lessons were in a Micra. I've had no problems with it. My insurance is hideous though £1.5k but I guess that's because it's new etc. I'm sure something like that will be fine
