Thumbs up Best action films

There's a couple of DVD & Home Cinema / HiFi threads about at the moment so...

Last night I watched Armageddon for the first time in ages and I'd forgotten just how enjoyable it was - sod Bruce's "that's why God gave us children" speach just get the popcorn out and enjoy...

Think I might get the Aliens DVD out tonight...

Be prepared for a dramatic decrease in 'real' action films. Now that Bruce Willis is suing a film company and special effects company for injuries sustained when a squib depicting a bullet strike went off at the wrong time I think we'll see an ever increasing use of CGI explosions and the like.

Best action film? The Terminator still has a special place in my heart.

The Crow or any of the Die Hard's

Oh I watched 'Romeo Must Die' again recently, and it's a good moive if you fast forward on the cheesy romance bits! I think 'Cradle 2 The Grave' had a little more action though.

Don't forget the classics, like Enter The Dragon, Starship Troopers, Terminator (1 or 2), First Blood (although a little slow in places), but give Cliffhanger or Daylight a go!

The only film I actively avoided, but only because I've seen it so many times (and now find it a bit dull!!), much like the original Star Wars... and T2 in fact!!

That said, when I demo my system to friends, I use the 'Lobby gunfight' scene from The Matrix!

The Pod Race from Phantom Menace is my demo clip of choice - it's a surround sound masterclass.

For demo-ing I always use the opening from LOTR Two Towers (Gandalfs falling fight with the Balrag (sp ?)), Jurassic Park 3 (dts) track 6 where the 2 dinosaurs fight, various bits of The Haunting (dts) and from VHS (as I'm waiting to get the DVD set for Crimbo) Return of the Jedi, the speeder bikes in the forest.

As for Armageddon, I used to hate it for all the obvious reasons, prefering the alternative Deep Impact. But I watched it recently and viewed as a no-brain popcorn flick I suppose it ticks the boxes. Might get it on DVD now

The Core was on Sky last weekend, and I'd just avoided this at the cinema as another disaster flick. But it was actually ok on the smallscreen. Not great, but quite okay for a dreary saturday night on the sofa.

For me it has to be Blade Runner. Not so much for the action as the atmosphere.

Blackhawk Down - excellent haunting soundtrack to go alongside it.

Some quality choices above!

One i would throw in the mix is BLADE. The opening fight scene is awsome with the thumping soundtrak to boot.

The first Die Hard is an action classic and Predator must rank pretty high too. Also Leon the Professional has a top drawer opening sequence.
Also liked Killing Zoe, which reminds me I must pick it up on DVD to replace my VHS ...
Oh yeah, and the first Robocop was good too !

Still have a soft-spot for Independence Day (big budget no brainer with great effects).

"Welcome to earth", "Hope you got airbags", "Now that's what I call a close encounter!" - absolute classic one liners.

Was just about to say this along with Black Hawk Down Another good'un is The Day after Tomorrow (provided you ignore those ridiculous wolves and the equally unbelievable storyline )...
