Default is there any way to get your phone to show all numbers dailed to it?

i'm getting "privite numbers" left right and central, and people put the phone down when you've said hello, with out responding.

i know you can't "privite number" the police. So is it possible to get hold of what they use for everyday use????????

thanks

its probably just an automated dialer, its rang you, seen youve answered and realised there are no agents free to speak to you, eventually you'll get through to some1 from the gas board or a credit card company, friggin annoying things

Funny one, I get lots on my land line But they're not justthem callers about rubbish they want you to buy whatever, some you hear breathing down

I have my landline number barred, so it would show up as no number or private number, but the main reason for that is because we are ex directory and it would defeat the object if anyone who we ring could get our number, it's a privacy thing But I wouldn't make funny calls off it, I hate getting them myself.

Next time it rings showing withheld or private number - Answer and don't say anything...just hold it to your ear...see what happens or what you can hear in the background

May give you a clue - if it hangs up anyway and theres nothing in the background it's probably an auto dialler.

If it's your ex you'll hear the breathing and the TV in the background

Thumbs up

You can get your phone set to refuse calls that are not identifiable! - a mate of mine had it & it works well.

As said you can have your phone set to refuse "no ID" calls, but there is no way of getting it to display a "caller witheld" number, the number is not "handed over" by the network so your phone doesn't actually know the number - even it wanted to tell you!!

If you could easily by-pass the system to show a "caller witheld" then there wouldn't be much point in having such a system in the first place

but..........

when you withhold and phone the police, they know your number. so there must be something out there that will let you do it.

well found this out so far!

quote

As a side technical note withheld numbers aren't really withheld, they are still sent but with a 'flag' in the carrier telling the receiving equipment not to display the number.

The police and also switchboards available for use by some major companies are just set to ignore this flag so the incomming number appears (they can also set what outgoing number appears regardless of the direct line used to call out from) .

You used to be able to get a free divert number from onetel that was a voice mail box, as a side effect they also forgot to enable this flag so you could get the number. I've no idea if this still works try reading uk.telecom or uk.telcom mobile newsgroups.

So if you install a rack full of carrier class equipment at your LLU'd exchanged, you might get somewhere.

If not, I'd give up

I bet one of the techies at FTEL (fujitsu Telecomunications Europe) could tell you how to do it.

Last time I was there a few years back they baffled me with strings of acronyms....however they did show me a DVD player playing DVD quality films live over the telephone network

I'll save the hassle - send me £50 and I'll send you some **** and bull about un-hiding a callers number. I won't even charge you P&P for the honour of making your wallet £50 lighter.

There used to be plans available on the net for "reading" the CLID of an incoming call with a PC (I think it is just sent as a fairly slow serial data stream - 1200bps?). *If* the number is still sent with a bit set to prevent its display, something like that would be able to display the number.

John.

This can be done- but not by mere mortals...

A friend of mine, erm... his mrs does something govt. related... (saying no more on that lol)

Due to her work, her mobile has been set with this thing, where if she gets a 'Withheld' or 'Private' number flash up, she presses a sequence of buttons (its only like 3 buttons to press) and it will display the number of the caller-regardless of if it has been purposefully withheld or whatever.
I was amazed when she showed me, but alas, she couldnt do it for my phone as im not important enough She did activate it on his phone though, the cow.
Ive seen and tested it with my own eyes, so it can definately be done by those in the know
As far as im aware, its not something activated on her handset- its on her account...and pressing the tone buttons activates it

That's what I was told, the netwoks don't pass a withheld tag on unless it's to Emergency services / within network services etc.

Surely if you could buy a switchboard that would display any "private" numbers all the big guns would do this to sell the numbers on to double-glazing firms etc. that can't buy them from a mailing list
