Paul Bigley tells Johnson to quit
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3758340.stm
What a jumped up jerk off Paul Bigley is. Has the man no dignity at all?
Boris should have taken a leaf from his Tonyness's book and never have offered an apology.

Boris Johnson accused Liverpudlians of wallowing in their victim mind-set. Ten days after Mr Bigley was horrifically murdered, people in that city are still wallowing in being victimised by Boris Johnson. I think this provides the clearest indication that Mr Johnson was broadly correct. I also question Paul Bigley's comments. He is a private citizen and his opinion carries no more weight than any other. What business is it of his to suggest that Mr Johnson should get out of public life?

Oh dear.
Maybe he should have spouted off at it brother, and persuaded him to heed the advice and warnings given and get out of Iraq before he was killed. Seems he wants to spout off at Borris because Borris is simply pointing out that people do like to wallow in self pity for quite some time (just look at the americans, still harping on about 9/11)

not sure I agree about the poppy crap. I'm no big fan of all that stuff, but the guys did fight in a war, for our freedom, whereas all that happened in the US was that they got a wake up call they had needed for a long time, and people unforunatley lost their lives.
Unlike us, who have been targets by groups like the IRA for many many years, and have realised you can't go wailing on and on about it, the yanks can't let it go, can they.

Boris is a top bloke - shouldnt have apologised - Entitled to his opinion and entitled to print it - people from "The Pool" are hardly the type to buy The Spectator anyway!!!
Anyway theryre all known for their wonderful sense of humour so Im sure they could laugh about it anyway
As for Bigley - who is giving this prat a voice? Like someone else said - should have put his opinions to good use and told his brother not to stay in Iraq...Plonker

Boris apologised for an article that wasnt even written by him but since he is the editor of the paper he accepted full responsiblility.
Top bloke who always speaks his mind and HAS OPINIONS and isnt afriad to air them...
If anyone has to resign its the leader of the labour party...

He shouldn't have made the Hillsborough comments, that is just asking for trouble, and perhaps he should have been more careful in his wording. I agree with his main point about sentimentality for someone you've never met but this is in no way exclusive to Liverpool.
OTOH, I've seen the pictures of Ken Bigley and he looks like any typical Scouser of that age. He reminds me of two or three who I have worked with in the last few years and that does make his murder all the more real to you.
Note that nowhere near as much attention was given to the previous kidnap victims, perhaps because they wern't as photogenic as Ken Bigley? The media know that a white old age friendly looking bloke who could easilly be your grandad, foreman, co-worker, bus driver, mate down the pub is going to pluck at the heartstrings of middle and working class England far more than a picture of a 20-something British muslim with a beard and that is sickening.

TBH I'm pretty much on Johnson's side, what was printed more or less echoed what I thought.
His attack was on the public moreso than the Bigley's
From what I understand of the comments made, I personally feel the mourning of Liverpool, and the national silence etc for Bigley's death was way OTT.
Tragic as it is, it was OTT. He was not well knwon or a public figure, the only people who knew him was his friends and family, no one else should need or have the right to mourn for him. Sympathy yes, condolence yes. But a national silence? Come on!
I would never want it myself. Frankly I'd be insulted if some stranger turned up at my funeral sobbing their heart out.
I never really read into it. But how long had it been since Ken lived in the UK...or liverpool for that? His wife was foreign, and from I read he had left and lived his life outside of the UK. Hardly a Liverpool man? That's me being cynical, but all the more reasoning as why I think the reaction, however tragic the situation was, was an massive overreaction. I'm not sure who instigated this cry of national mourning, but to me it stunk of political correctness.

Totally agree with Boris Johnson on the views about Liverpool grieving for someone they have never met. Making him apologise is a joke, he has only said what the rest of the country think. Paul Bigley telling him to get out of public life and insulting his physical appearance showed what a stupid man Paul Bigley is. Shame he wasn't able to give his brother some decent advice, like listen to the warnings and the authorities and get the **** out of Baghdad

has anyone got a link to the original spectator story?
Dont worry, I've just read it.
I have to say that apart from his very misguided and illjudged generalisations about scousers the rest of the article is a triumph of common sense.
If anyone wants a copy of it just pm me.
