Shipping Vehicles to America - 'once in a lifetime' opportunity
Trusting in the 'SN know's everything' adage here, not having much luck elsewhere!
Basically, I've got the opportunity of a lifetime to travel around Alaska, Canada and America. We've decided we're going to pick up the challenge to take a 32 year old Series IIA Land Rover and an 18 year old Range Rover to all 49 inland states in America including the Alaskan Highway (Hawaii might be pushing it! ) completing as many miles off-road as possible and hopefully raising a shedload of cash for Children in Need as we go
Anyway, aside from all the minor details you have to worry about with a 32 year old Land Rover, we have to get the vehicles over there in the first place.
Does anyone know a reputable shipping company, ideally as cheap (but reliable ) as possible as all money raised will go straight to charity and we'll be funding the trip ourselves?
We'll need to container them over as they'll be full of exhibition gear (roof tents etc.).
Neither of us has ever attempted anything like this before, so any advice would be gratefully received
Thanks
Jen

You could try somebody like P&O Nedlloyd Jen.
How about trying to turn the cost around and try to get somebody like them to sponsor your trip and hence stand the transport cost? All good PR for them

No prob Jen. I used to have a customer in London that organised shipping for all manner of stuff so I know the names of the carriers.
Other names coming to mind...
DHL now includes Danzas who are big in shipping - http://www.dhl.co.uk/danzas/index.html has a name for PR enquiries.
Hapag LLoyd are big but German based (IIRC), so maybe not as open to a UK event like CiN.

Markus - will do lovey, aiming for late next year atm..but the Series 2 still needs a new Chassis first!
Buck - Certinaly is a challenge! Re: the milage, mm, difficult one...we've worked out an intial route covering just under 15,000 miles...but we've now got this new plan so it might have to change a bit! New route plan working out session is probably happening tomorrow night, so we'll see...going to be interesting in 2 Rover V8's anyway!! Glad fuel's a bit cheaper out there!

Dunno if you have got the vehicles prepped anyway but they may be able to help, also i remember reading on a land rover web site that only certain vehicles were suitible for export to canada and the states this may have been age related import laws into the states and canada don't know the ages but I am hoping it is 18 years or over!
Sounds like a really good trip am very jealous!!
Good luck
Andy

Hiya Andy
Thanks for the links - we've started, but the big things have yet to come...someone mentioned Frog's Island to me ages ago, and I'd completely forgotten about it - so that was definatly a useful reminder
We can get away with the vehicles as it's only on Temporary Import - the regulations are alot stricter if you're there for over a year, At least that's what I've read and been told so far, I'm waiting for confirmation in writing
All getting a bit real now...still, planning session tonight
Jen

Jen, try Transportation Logistics Ltd in Derby, the owner is a freind of mine and they handle all of our non-nominted imports/ exports- they have very strong contacts in the USA. The guy you need to speak to is Dave Parsons, mention my name Rich Walkden from Capricorn. ph is 01332 290450.
If you need a contact for shipping etc in the States let me know, another ex director of my firm has his own biz in Cali.

Rich, thanks for that You're a star...going to start ringing around on Monday once we know (for sure) roughly where we want to start from, so will add Rich to my list
Sal - yeah, amazing the things you get up when your life changes eh?! Preliminary start date we have in mind is July-ish ...yet tbc for sure, lots of people to talk to first. Don't worry - I'm sure you'll all know about it when it gets nearer!! Only bad thing - no WRC in the states
...wonder if SN fancies a large sticker on a Landy... ?
