Default MP3 ringtones on SE K700i

I've just downloaded an MP3 tone to my Sony Ericsson K700i, and although it has saved in my tones folder, it will not allow me to allocate it as a ringtone.

The options to allocate as ringtone/alarm/message alert etc are all there, but they are greyed out and cannot be selected.

Any ideas why not?

If it is vodafone, they have disabled the feature for some strange reason.

It's Vodafone's attempt at copyright protection - a firmware patch is apparently available to fix it but VF are reluctant to distribute it.

Yes I'm on Vodafone...

So have I coughed up for a phone that can play MP3's, but I just can't use them?

Their arguement would be that they intended the phone to be able to store MP3s for YOU to listen to, not to play out loud for everyone to hear...

Crap or what?

I've heard you can take Vodafone K700i's to your nearest SE service centre and they'll flash the phone's firmware to get rid of the vodafone branding and leave you with an unbranded phone (like you get if you buy it sim-free)!!

Dunno if it's true - but worth a try!!

Silly question here: How do I find out where my nearest SE service centre is?

Most of these places seem to be simply 'shops': IE if you don't want to just buy a phone, everything else has to be done by intelligent folks requiring your phone to be sent away for weeks...

ust got back from VF shop and the salesman reiterated what you said.

He said that a SE rep told him that any authorised SE service centre can "patch" the firmware, so that they can be used as ringtones.

As for where the SE service centres are, I asked VF salesman and it turns out that several Carphonewarehouse stores are service centres, so just phone yoru local one and ask them.

Just found out that Vodafone are apparently bowing to pressure, and a Firmware update is due for release imminently for the VF SE K700i so that MP3 files can be used as ringtones etc.

We'll see if this comes to fruition.....

Is the Mp3 file DRM protected ? I'm not sure but I think you can only allocate Mp3's as ringtones if they are DRM protected.
