AUTO box

2 locks the transmission in 2nd gear, usually for going up hills or starting on snow and ice, not sure about L, what kind of car is it, if its an off roader it may be Low Range for off road driving.

yeah i think the yanks use "L"
BB
also i think you'll find "2" is not for going up hill, as much as downhill, so you aren't on the brakes all the time, in places like devon and cornwall etc...

Depends on what it's fitted too.
Some manufacurers use "2" to lock the car in 2nd, some use "2" to only give you the first two gears and some use "2" to give you the first two gears but with high change points.
Same as for "L" really, not many boxes use "L" now and it depends if how many gears the box has. "L" will usually only give you lower gears so is handy on older boxes when you are towing etc. Modern boxes usually have more selection such as P,R,N,D,4,3,2 and a selection of Normal, Sports and Winter modes or a full sequential shift option.
To be honest the latest electronic 5, 6 or 7 speed auto's don't need all the lower gear selection as D covers 99% of driving conditions and you can always stick it in sport mode when pressing on. Most boxes can also detect if you are going down hill and give engine braking as well.
Cheers
