Are monkey bikes road legal?
I've been toying with the idea of buying a mini moto but that got me onto thinking about a monkey bike just to go to the corner shop and back.
So are they road legal?
Does anyone else have one and use it on the road?
How much fun are they and does the novelty ware off ??

Just been looking at this site, the trip to the Derbyshire Dales looked like a laugh.
You can even get tuning stuff for them!!

Theres quite a few nice looking bikes, not cheap brand new though.

First launched in 1961, the Monkey Bike has become one of the all time motor bike classics. Initially, it was designed by Honda as a novelty mini bike for an amusement park in Japan. But you can’t keep a good monkey down and it soon developed a life all of its own.

I saw a guy riding through town on one of those road legal quads the other day (the motocross type without mudguards) he wasn't wearing a helmet either, which i thought was brave, he sure got a few strange looks.

Yes it is legal....I used to have a Honda Dax, used to use it for romping over fields and stuff. Was taxed and MOT'd too
Was a hoot...Best trick is doing full throttle shifts with the clutchless gearbox and popping up the front wheel when you go from 1st to 2nd gear
I think some Chinese company makes almost identical replicas now which I've seen at exhibitions...I can't comment if these would conform to UK regulations. The genuine Hondas do though.

Err, mini moto's can be made road legal. Its just out of the crate they are for road use, but you can fit a horn, a brake light and speedo and hey presto, road legal mini moto. It was done about 5-6years ago by someone when they first started appearing, an article on it appeared in Performance Bikes at the time..
