the florida thing is because the spots got dried out. dont use clean and clear or oxy ten etc all it does is bring them out. just have a wash 3 or 4 times a day with clean water etc....

toothpaste on them before u go to bed should help too...

When i were a nipper I had a mild problem on my fod, the GP prescribed this white powder and a solution that you mixed together and created a chemical reaction. You put dabs of it on your skin and it basically fries it and dries it. Cleared it up for me very quickly.

Dont fiddle with them.
Look at your diet- how much crap do you eat?
Loads and loads of water (try bottled water)
No stress
Cleanse and wash.
Sun will help yes.

They dont magically disappear past a certain age either- i still get the odd one from time to time

If your acne is serious and painful, ask your GP about a referral to a specialist so you can be prescribed something like Roaccutane. Its a very fierce anti-acne drug, that needs careful monitoring but does the trick.

Toothpaste does work in that it dries the skin out, but please be VERY careful when you apply it. If it gets on the surrounding good skin it will dry that out horribly and it can take a week or more to recover. I know this because I literally did the same about two weeks ago. I had a couple of small spots and I thought I'd try toothpaste. I was far too liberal with it, getting it on the surrounding skin. The next morning the spots had dried up, but they were surrounded by skin that had turned a funny orange shade and had gone all dry and slightly 'wrinkly'.

There's no trace now, but it has put me off the whole idea. Thankfully, I'm now virtually spot-free, but if they re-appear in the future I think I would rather try a dedicated product!

I'll second asking your GP to refer you to a Dermatoligist, they usually give you a long course of anti-biotics or two (for as long as 6 months!) and/or one of a variety of oil/creme/gel treatments but these never worked for me so I'm now using Roaccutane (4 month course and supposed to be the nearest thing there is to a total cure but it's a strong treatment and I tried lots of different things first). Acne can be a nightmare to deal with though....

Also there's no need to wash your face anymore than twice a day, anymore and you'll end up damaging your skin.

If the sun worked then maybe try using sun beds, not tango like just a few sessions of uv to see if it helps?!?!

may i ask what age please. is this not just your time of life for acne and spots. i don't want to sound patronising here, but being an old 38 now, i do have some experience with acne as a young un, but i suffered it and eventually it want way. i wouldn't say it was really bad acne, but at that age chasing women there was nothing worse than a humungus bogus on my face somewhere. my wrinkly face has no acne now, just a permanent 3 day growth of beard.

Also shaving can be a problem and a cause, you may be given a mixture of surgical spirits and some oxycept do soak your razor in. This is a big help for those who suffer from razor rash after shaving. Also after shaving use a product called fuciden gell. Roaccutane is as been said a severe drug, which must be monitored carfully. It can damge u internally, and while your on it your skin looks even worse, but after a few months it starts to work really well. Go to your GP and ask to see a speacialist, its well worth it, my skin was very good but every few months it would flare up, and i just thought i aint having it, i was prob 22-23. I am now 31 and as everyone does i still get the odd spot but its very few, hardly ever to be honest.

Drink plenty of water and avoid crisps, chocolate and fried food.

edit : Whoops...just seen that you've tried that already. Maybe you need to try a bit longer or make a radical change of diet. It may be a food allergy.

it dosnt really matter what you eat, tho you should drink lots of water, if you are prone to acne you will get it anyway.

best thing is to go to the doctors, there are many different anti biotics and some forms of the pill (yes i know u are male but they work for acne in males too) that really really clear up your skin, try a pill called yasmin if it is available for men to use too, i had years and years of problem skin and tried EVERYTHING... yasmin has cleared it completely

Mine dropped 36 years ago and I've still got it!!

Beware long term use of these "'cycline" antibiotics as they play hell with the liver as I have found out. The side effects are scary and should be fully understood before you get on the course. However, only you can make that choice based on quality of life etc.

Diet/exercise is relevant as is stress but sun is definitely good for the condition. Some private clinics specialise in UV beds for acne but I guess you'd get the same result at your local health club.

Good luck.

Back in my spotty days of yore my dermatologist gave me some:

"Oxytetracyline" pills. Dunno what they did.

Astringent lotion, basically a lotion cleans and disinfects the face from bateria - was a bit like surgical spirit.

Quinoderm creme with hydrocourtasin(sp?) same as your oxy/clearasil creams, smells foul, greasy and stings

And lastly he gave this advice...which is probably the most important IMO.....

Wash with normal soap, no namby pamby Moisturising stuff, or scented crap...simple soap!

Wash it regulary, minimum twice, ideally 3 or 4 times

Don't touch your face! Hard to believe, but that's where the bacteria comes from...your hands, every time you scratch your nose, lean on your hand etc, anything on your hands that came from a door **** is on your face - doesn't help the yellow heads one bit. So wash your hands too.

By any means have a pick and squeeze on the odd one, but not till they are sore and bleed, or swell up, leave them! Also, remember cleans hands, nails and face...don't want them to turn to yellow heads do you?

I was joking JFB

Seriously PG, try Manuka honey. Obvioulsy you cant walk about with this stuff on yer face, but its 30 times stronger than T-Tree oil at killing bacteria, they even use it on hospitals now for killing nasty bacteria, or even some Aloe Vera gel, which you can walk about with on yer coupon without attracting bees

Jye, we bought that stuff last time you recommended it, but HTF are you supposed to use it? Can't walk around sticky-faced, can't go to bed sticky-faced... How long are you supposed to leave it on for? 10 mins or 10 hours?

I had antibiotics from the docs when I was 14ish, erythomycin I think they were. They did work while I was on them but it must mess up your friendly bacteria™ as my stomach made more noise than you'd believe and has never quite recovered 5 or so years on!

What you want is Which Doctor. Comes in a blue and white toothpaste sized tube from big supermarkets and chemists or health shops. Spread a bit on a spot and in a day or two it will be gone. I was pretty amazed to find something that worked so well after trying so many so many Clearasil type potions that didn't.

I think there is a common misconception that acne is connected to what you eat. In general, acne is hormone related, hence appearing normally in adolescence and then disappearing later on. Acne occurs when the body starts to produce hormones called androgens. Androgens cause the enlargement and overstimulation of the sebaceous glands in people with acne. The extra sebum (oil) that the sebaceous glands produce mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria on the skin's surface and this blocks pores. Inside the blocked pore, bacteria multiply and cause inflammation leading to acne spots.

If you are still having problems in adulthood then you may have a hormone imbalance of some kind and should see a doctor.

Yeah Brendan, this is the tricky, or sticky part. Whenever I have (rarely) used it myself I put it on as soon as I came in from work and then wash it off before going to sleep. Depending where your plook (or whatever) is you can also use one of those small medical pads (with the plastic gause on one side) and judicious use of medical tape to hold it all in place.

I must admit when my spotty GF used it frequently in the past (overnight) there was some rather dubious stains on the bedclothes
