Question Stansted Airport Flight Paths question

I've looked everywhere else for the answer to this question and found nothing so I thought I'd try the ScoobyNet font of knowledge - please don't let me down folks

Right my question is this: My parents live under the Stansted Flight Path in the village of Stanstead Abbotts, usually there's lots of plane activity, some days planes are flying over after take-off and some days they fly over as they're coming in to land but for the last few weeks there has been no plane activity whatsoever over their house.

We're confused as to why this is, does anyone know?

Cheers

Sal

Sal, I emailled Stansted Airport a few months ago to complain about a plane that went over our house at 3am, apparently they are not supposed to fly over residential areas at certain times, they did send a letter of apology and have logged the complaint, (you will know the reason why I complained) anyway in this letter was a map of the flight paths, I couldn`t understand it mind but it might be worth emailling them and see if they give you an answer.

(found this...http://www.stopstanstedexpansion.com/maps.html)
Didn`t understand that either!!!!!!!!!

Joan.
P.S are you coming down for the Alton meet....Sunday 12th September????

Well it's still quiet down here - haven't seen or heard a plane all day. It is a bit unusual especially at this time of year.

Tiggs, my parents haven't but they're starting to wonder if Stansted Airport has

Cheers Joan, can I have the email address you wrote to please? I've been on the SSE site too, iirc there used to be a site that gave local residents info as to which direction the planes were flying on a daily basis but I've not been able to find it after extensive searching.

P.S No, 'fraid not, we'll be in Wales ready for the rally

Yep, I know. I work in Heathrow and am responsible for answering questions like this, for people affected by LHR operations.

Aircraft land and take-off into the wind, it helps to generate lift on the wings.
I would imagine you'll find that the wind direction, measured at 1000 and 2000 feet hasn't changed for a while, thats why your parents haven't noticed them. We cannot tell you what direction flight ops will be, because only the big man upstairs knows what the wind direction will be, next Wednesday, when the families coming over for a BBQ. ;-)

Contrary to popular belief, flightpaths, they're called NPR's, or Noise Preferential Routes, hardly change. Heathrows NPR's have been established for almost 50 years now. Airspace is very highly regulated, for obvious reasons, and adding or changing a route takes years of planning, not to mention the public consultation that would legally have to be undertaken. These NPR's are only for departing aircraft, and aircraft are only required to stay on them until 4000ft, for LHR, I think STN is 3000ft, although they do have a couple of SID's at 4000ft as well, as does LGW.

Hope this helps.

Joan,
Not sure where you got that website from, but it aint BAA's. To log a complain about aircraft noise at Stansted phone 0800 243 788. Each complaint is looked at by our staff on our Noise and FlightTracking System, and will be investigated if found to be A: Excessively noisy and B: Off-track.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that FlightMan, it's nice to have the definitive answer

I want to complain about the lack of planes, we were staying down there a week or two ago and missed watching them

Fingers crossed the wind will be in the right direction this weekend as we'll be staying down there for Duxford.

Scoobychick, come visit us at LHR, an arrival/departure every 90 secs, we're a proper airport! ;-)

Enjoy Duxford.

Sounds good to me -- maybe it will be quiet over Manor of Groves now.

Cool

Scoobychick, I'm sorry you've missed seeing the planes, but they have been there, believe me. We've just broken our daily movement record total twice in the last two weeks.

Flightman knows his stuff about Standard Instrument Departures (SID's) and Noise Preferential Routings (NPR's). There are 7 different departures at Stansted. Three to the North and four to the South/East.
Depending on the direction of the wind the planes either land on runway 23 (ie, flying the last 10 miles or so into Stansted on a compass heading of 230 degrees) or runway 05 (the opposite direction).

I'm working in the morning so if you like I'll get a couple to buzz your house.

Blobster,

If you run into Kris B in the FEU up there tomorrow, tell him to sort out his complainants will you? I'm busy enough with LHR during the day without having to sort out STN on Scoobynet for him! ;-)

FlightMan & Blobster, I love you guys

Thank you both so much for answering that, it's been really bugging us.

FM, I would take you up on your offer of a visit to LHR but Leeds/Bradford is now my local airport so you've had a lucky escape there

And Blobster, my dad will be looking out for a couple of planes in the morning

I'll post some pics of Duxford on Monday, they'll be mainly blurry, out of focus shots of some GR4's and the Red Arrows

How I get to do that? Used to controlling 40/50 guys and 500 movements a day in a pressured environment

(Probably too old now )
