Get a rescue dog. More fulfilling, fun and a pain in the a**. Seriously if you want a lab there are bound to be plenty in kennels. Search for labrador rescue on the net and get one of them.
Puppies only sh*t on the floor anyway.

try these

Its really worthwhile giving a rescue a home. We've had 3 now and although the one we got from Swindon is psychotic, he is hilarious. 9st of mad, red French Mastiff.

Try and find a breeder that shows dogs as then you'll know they know and care about the breed. Then go and see them and ask to see mum and dad if around. Research the breed first so you have some knowledge of what to look out for. DL

Definately try the kennel club site for breeders in your area. We have just got our latest labrador, Lucy, from a breeder and though a slight attention seeker, a delight to have around. Decided whether you want a lab from show or working lines ( working tend to need even more exercise than the normal )....and dont invest in a book called Your Lab's Life by Virginia Parker Guidry.... sickly american...hopeless info...and forget the 'labby massage' that she suggest...never works!

David,
Why only look for a breeder that shows dog? Why not someone who works dogs?
I got mine from a working home (gun dog) and have had no problems what so ever. It depends what you want the dog for as to where you get it. A bloke I see regularly walking his dogs has 2 golden labs, 1 from working stock one from show. He says the show one is as thick as **** compared to the other and just lays around doing nothing all the time. He says if he gets another it will definately be a working breed one.
Just my opinion.

Kev - fine, no problem with that.
The point I was making was to try and buy from someone who knows and cares about dogs. My mention of research was exactly that - to understand that there may be different types within the breed such as the kid loving family Lab' or the working dog with different characteristics which may, for example, expect more exercise.
We got a Golden Retriever from a dragon of a breeder and she was more concerned about whether we were suitable folk to have a Golden than just selling another dog. In fact the breeder still keeps in touch after 5 years and has been very helpful when our Golden had some health problems. DL

The prices also seem to range vastly from £250 upto £650? Been researching/deciding whether i want a dog for 6 odd months now and have decided on a choc or golden lab!
The dog will be kept as a pet, does it matter whether its working or show type? I intend to walk it 3-4 times per day and we have a medium sized garden.

Whatever you do, don't go to a puppy farm. See as many litters as you can, and after a few you will be able to tell the good ones - age for age they'll be much bigger than the farmed ones.
BTW, they are yellow labs, and the hairy ones are golden retrievers. My two are black
