Edinburgh for the weekend....
Any one know Edinburg? Were going for a long weekend and would like to know the places to visit in the day, like the Castle etc and where to eat in the evening?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Guys.

Things to do in Edinburgh:
- Castle (takes most of the day but is terrific)
- Open top bus
- Rugby at Murrayfield (if there's a game on)
- Tour the vaults (various guided tours leave from the Royal Mile, the road up to the Castle)
- Art gallery on Princess St
- National Museum
- Holyrood palace (the £430m carbuncle for the Scottish Parliament - I think there are tours)
Eat at Oloroso (fabulous roof top restaurant bot indoor and outdoor) with views of the castle lit up at night. Then go to the Opal Lounge (relaxed nightclub/ bar)
Have fun!

It's not the cheapest, to be fair - Ricks is quite good during the day and not too pricey. The Scotsman (hotel the other side of the bridge going up from Waverley station) is quite good, too.

What Gordo says
Big thumbs up here for the Oloroso and Opal Lounge here!
Dynamic Earth is good, it's down by the joke/eyesore that is otherwise known as the parliament
If it's nice and you are on Princes Street, take a wee walk along Princess Street Gardens
The Royal mile has loads on it - John Knox's house, the museum of childhood, witchery tours, the whiskey heritage centre (you get a free shot at the end!! ), camera obscura, St Giles kirk, the Heart of Midlothian , etc. That should keep you busy for a day at least!!
Steer clear of Fountain Park - it sucks **** BIG time. Flop if I ever did see one!!
There is good shopping down at Ocean Terminal (which is about a fiver in a taxi from the city centre). There are some bars/restaurants but I haven't been to them before so can't judge. The Royal Yacht Britannia is down there too, been there for a few years now and the neds still haven't managed to get to it. That is the area where all the ladies of the night used to hang about, but they have been shifted as the whole are has been re-developed and is a bit too swanky for them If you are down that way, head to the Shore - Guillianos is one of the best places I have ever eaten in my life - there are also a few nice bars down there too.
The Zoo is fantastic (all though I cry everytime I see the polar bear - Mercedes ). It's not far from the city centre, 10 minute bus journey or £5 in a taxi. It is on the side of a HUUUUUUGE hill though and does get pretty steep at times.
There is also the Greenhill centre (Gordo/imlach - is that what its called?). Has some restaurants and a Jongleurs (sp?) comedy club and stuff.
I think thats about it really!

Edinburgh is a great place, and people are very friendly.
If you fancy an indian, try the Cavalry Club.
Very nice indeed.

Water meets monitor moment SiPie!! EVERYTIME - that line appears!!
Stephen, sweetie, that's because I am always right. I can, however, admit to when I am wrong unlike some people! (which by default makes me right!)

That's a good idea! (Sparks possible romantic weekend away! )
Is the city small enough to do the touristy thing without a car (as I'd like to fly or get the train up)? Or would it be best to look at either taking the car up/hiring one?

You only really want to do the centre of it as the rest of it is really naff. Just houses and stuff. If I have anyone visiting it's always on foot or public transport/black cab. The public transport up here has won the Best UK bus firm blah blah blah every year for the past few years now. They run very regularly and are clean brand spanking new buses (Exterior paintwork is modelled on Liz Hurley's dress with all the squares on it, no really it is!!)
To get from one side of the city centre to the other will cost you a max £5 in a taxi.

Was well worth it though.
Edited to add - don't let that put you off - we had a couple of bottles of wine, plus appertifs, plus port.....and I had a fillet steak which was around £30.
You should be able to do Oloroso for £100 for two.....

Thanks the info, it would make life much easier not to take the car!!!
