Nightwish - is "Once" any good
Have to say I quite like the video for "Nemo" and it sounds like they could be an interesting outfit. Any opinions on their latest offering?
Just for the record, I quite liked Evanesence too but their CD hasn't had a lot of airplay on my gear as it all sounds so....samey.

No-one listened to it?
Or did I answer my own question?
Reason for the bump back to the top is that I just "found" my nearest Virgin Megastore and will be going shopping for some new tunes tomorrow. Any other rock recommendations are welcome. Cheers !

You should try Lacuna Coil - it's been described to me as Evanescence but good!
Haven't heard anything by Nightwish, although the lead singer looks a bit of a fox (if you're into the gothic look ). They're getting a fair few column inches in the rock press at the mo.
If you get the album let us know if it's any good.
FYI - recent acquisitions are Dimmu Borgir-Death Cult Armageddon and Emperor-Scattered Ashes
Didn't really get into black metal before but really like Emperor, so roll on pay day more sounds to purchase!

Nightwish Once is ok, Nemo's a very good track and there are other good songs on the album, but I find it get's a bit same-y - I can't really get 'into it' as such, but yeah it makes a pleasant listen.
Lacuna Coil is ok too, Swamped is a good track off the Comalies album, but I find them a little same-y too.
I'm liking the rock chicks thing at the mo though
Having said that, picked up Lost Prophets 'Start Something' album cheap in HMV and that's getting plenty of listens

Excellent ! Thanks chaps, I see about 4 purchases (including "Once") to add to some "fillers" that I need to pick up to complete parts of my collection. Will give you my views on "Once" after I've played it through a few times.

Well the trip to my "local" (25kms away) Virgin "Megastore" turned out to be a bit of a damp squib The price of the CDs was exorbitant, not to mention the price of the videos, plus the selection was crap. I was expecting something along the lines of the London and Paris stores but it wasn't to be.
Buggrit.
I did manage to find the Machine Head CD I needed to complete my collection (The Burning Red) but no sign of the rest of the stuff I was after - Nightwish, Emperor, Lacuna Coil, Funker Vogt, Sevendust etc.
Picked up "Once" in another shop though and played it through once on the return journey. I agree with DocJock and Muffleman, it's definitely operatic (think Savatage mixed with Vanden Plas mixed with Symphony X) and does get a bit samey towards the end but I think the heavy soundtrack keeps it from doing an Evanesence on me. It's better than I expected and will provide a nice change from the 'knot, the 'Head and others when I feel like it (usually just bung on some Andrea Boccelli when I want to mellow out, well either that or some dinosaur rock). The vamp chick has a great pair of lungs and can (also ) belt out a song and there's some very accomplished musicianship here. I was expecting something more along the lines of HIM - scandanavian gothic rock - and whilst there's certainly plenty of the "pay the ferryman" idiom it kind of gives the album a throwback to Yes days and those huge concept albums.
I can see it growing on me and liking it as much as I like Vanden Plas' "The God Thing" which is a cracking album - only problem I have is that these type of prog-rock bands usually only have a couple of decent albums in them before they burn out.
Review over I guess !
